John Winn Obituary

John William Winn - "the dad" After a brief battle with COVID-19, John passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital on April 13, 2021 in his 78th year. John was a proud and loving father to Jay and Lisa, and a cherished and devoted husband to Carol. He is survived by brother David, sister Pat, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Margaret. Born and raised in Hamilton, John traveled extensively during his time with the Royal Canadian Navy before joining the Hamilton Police Service. His career spanned 29 years where he served in many departments - his favourite being the Marine Unit. He was noted as a dedicated and respected officer. Never one to sit idle, John had many part-time jobs after retirement, including captaining Hamilton Harbour boat tours. He took up oil painting, expanded his culinary skills, and could be found in the front row of all of his daughter's live music and fundraising events. One of John's proudest moments was watching his son graduate law school and passing the bar exam. Well known for his unique sense of humour, John always had a one-liner or a witty joke handy. He could bring laughter to any situation. John will be remembered for his love for his children, his love of music, and his kind, generous nature. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of John's life will occur when it is appropriate to do so. Donations to Ladybird Animal Sanctuary, Environment Hamilton, or any other local charity close to your heart are appreciated.

I fondly remember John when he was still a police officer. We had him over for Christmas dinner one year (1989 or 1990) can't remember exactly. He was still on duty, but managed to find the time for a pleasant experience. He was excellent with kids. He even managed to coax his (then) teenaged daughter (Lisa) to baby sit for us on several occasions. You are a great person, and will be missed.

Charlie and I were so sad to read of John's passing and our hearts go out to his partner, Carol, his family and friends. We appreciated John's adventurous spirit and droll sense of humour. What a great legacy of community service he has lived. We know he will be missed and are grateful for getting to meet him when your travels brought you both to our part of Ontario. John has led a remarkable life and is an inspiration of life long learning and enjoyment to us. John Winn was a lovely person and leaves this world better than it was before he got here.

I have fond memories of John when I worked with him in uniform patrol at Kenilworth Station. His calm disposition and compassion toward others, particularly in difficult situations, came easy to him. May the love and support of your family and friends help you through this difficult time.

At the end of my third week of Nights, as careers then began, I screwed up my Days Off ... Sunday Saturday is not the same as Saturday Sunday... So...
when the phone rang on the Saturday night and my Sergeant asked if I was coming to work, my heart sank. I was brand new, on probation! My wife and I had been out for dinner and drinks on arrival home. Hadn't seen her for three weeks while on Nights.
I'll shorten the story to my Sergeant dropping me off at Barton and James, in a borrowed uniform, my one outfit in the cleaners ...turning me over to John Winn, with instructions to "Lean him against the wall of hotel for an hour." Thus began my friendship and admiration for John... always quick witted with the voice of experience available when needed.
Though our job paths diverged in the coming years, my respect never waned. ...a gentleman always and a friend indeed. If you ever needed help, you'd hear, "Ready, Aye, Ready", in true RCN tradition. Fair winds, Sailor. I'll miss you.

I worked with John in uniform at Kenilworth Stn for a couple years. His professional conduct was enhanced by his subtle but great sense of humour. He was a super guy to work with and was blessed with great common sense. Rest in Peace, John.

It is with great sadness I extend my condolences.
John was a wonderful Man, Friend and Brother.
Very early in my Policing Career, John assured me that we work as a team and he had my back. He was definitely one of the ‘good guys’, you could approach him for help anytime.
Always kind, always wise, lots of fun!
Until we meet again my Brother.
Goodbye.
To his Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you manage through this difficult time.

I remember working with your dad when I was a brand new officer, we got into a tussle with a prisoner and had to fill out an injured on duty report when the fight was over. Simultaneously I was filling out my birth date as he was filling out his start date with the service. Needless to say I made him feel old when my birthdate and his start date were the exact same day! We laughed, he was such a sweet man. ❤

I offer my sincerest sympathy to the entire Winn family. I had the pleasure of knowing John for many years as we made our way through our police careers. Although I didn't work directly with him, I did get to enjoy his light-hearted nature. He had a certain calmness about him but also a witty side came out often enough. I'm glad to know he accomplished so many things after retirement.
May he rest in peace.
