Daniel Pendleton Obituary

Daniel Fenton Pendleton, 84, passed away June 11, 2013 peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born October 25, 1928 in Las Vegas, NV to Gus Chatterley Pendleton and Marvel Estella Abbott. He married Delores Frei in the St. George LDS Temple on April 15, 1948. Following the death of Delores, he married Beate Butz Pyper on August 2, 2001 in the St. George LDS Temple.

Dan spent his early childhood in Bunkerville, NV in the midst of the Great Depression. He moved with his family to St. George in 1936 where he graduated form Dixie High School and attended Dixie College. He learned the basics of welding, mechanics, machining and engineering from his father. He worked in construction and following his marriage and the birth of sons, Daniel Edward and Gary Wayne, he served with the 213th Artillery Battery in Korea. On returning home, he resumed his work in construction in St. George, Blanding and Monticello where daughters, Lark, Melanie and Gina were born. He moved his family to Henderson, NV in 1961 where Gus Curtis was born. Dan was largely self-educated with a keen mind and encyclopedic memory. Even after he developed dementia, he was able to quote epic poems and stories that he had memorized over the years. He had a talent for all things mechanical and could tackle many an engineering feat. He dabbled in painting, portraiture, sculpting and even cake decorating. He had the uncommon gift of good common sense. While living in Henderson, Dan superintended construction on many large commercial construction projects in the Las Vegas Valley. He served as Bishop of the Henderson 5th Ward 1969-1974 and has served the Lord faithfully throughout his life. In 1975 he moved back to Santa Clara where he worked as a general contractor in home and small commercial construction. In 1982 he and Delores lived in Saudi Arabia for a short time where Dan superintended construction. They moved to Ivins in 1990 and settled on a small farm previously homesteaded by his father-in-law. Dan loved southern Utah more than any other place on Earth and delighted in his view of the Red Mountains.

He is survived by his wife: Beate Butz Pyper Pendleton and her children and grandchildren; children: Daniel Edward Pendleton (Ilene Peterson) of Henderson, NV, Gary Wayne Pendleton (Debra Simmons) of Ivins, Lark Pendleton Taylor (Ronald Jay Taylor) of Santa Clara, Melanie Pendleton Neighbor (Jeffrey Allen Neighbor) of Ivins, Gina Pendleton Blake (Christopher Cox Blake) of Ivins and Gus Curtis Pendleton (Kristina Schwiermann) of Ivins, and 30 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren; and siblings: James Abbott Pendleton and Nita Pendleton Ashby.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel on Center Street and Main Street in Ivins. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will follow at the Santa Clara City Cemetery. My sympathies to the family. Bishop Pendleton was a really great man and will be missed. Not a day goes by that I don't remember or use a lesson he taught me. He was one of those people you rarely ever meet but never forget. His insight into all things was truly remarkable. I will treasure all my memories not only with him but with all members of his family who are so special. May the Lord bless you all at this time.

My love goes out to you all. Uncle Dan was a wonderful man. I will always remember him telling us exciting stories and poems around the campfire at Pine Valley during our family reunions. I will also never forget his beautiful blue eyes which made you feel like he could see your every thought. I know he is very happy to be home with the rest of our family who has passed on. That would have been a heart warming sight to see. Love Patty Bair

So sorry to hear of the death of this great man. I remember him fondly in Henderson as a bishop and knew his wife and children. May God bless you at this time with all you stand in need of.
