St. George

Max Gardner Abbott, 92, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Seasons Health and Rebahilitation in St. George, Utah. Max and his twin sister Maxine were born April 26, 1921 to Nathan and Rose (Gardner) Abbott in Delta, Utah. He lived in Bunkerville for most of his childhood years.

Max served in the Navy in WWII following L.D.S missionary service in Nebraska. He met and married his bride, Twila Smith, in 1943. They remained married until her death in 2007. Max wed again in 2011, marrying his cherished, long time friend Ruth D. Christensen in St. George, Utah.

Max had a long and distinguished career as an educator. He took on the progressively responsible roles of teacher, school principal, and superintendant of schools in Utah. Following his attainment of a P.H.D. from the University of Chicago in 1961, Max held professorships at the University of Rochester, Auburn University, and the University of Oregon, from which he retired. He was respected and beloved by students and colleagues alike as a great researcher, caring mentor, and strong administrator. Max loved to spend time with his family and friends, especially at home where he could give his full attention to gardening and home improvements. In retirement he was a volunteer advocate for the needs of his fellow residents of Sterling Court in St. George.

Max is predeceased by his twin, Maxine Mott (Norman); his sister Heremese Thiess (William); and his brother Brent (Norma). He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Christine; son Stephen (Judy); daughter Rebecca Larson (Rich), grandson, Christian Morrison, brothers Keith (Paula), Myron (Lova), Roy (Pat) and Richard (Suzun); sister Mary Johnson (True); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct 9, 2013 at the LDS Church, 259 North Mall Drive at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm at the Bunkerville Cemetery in Bunkerville, NV. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Society. Under the direction of Heideman Hughes Mortuary 435-674-5000.
