Robert Smith Obituary

Robert R. Smith, "that's Bob with one 'o'," as he would always say, age 90, passed away on Dec. 30, 2014. There will be no service at his request and a spreading of his ashes at a later date. Bob was the Boy Scout Executive for the Western Alaska Council from 1960-1975, and continued to support scouting till his final days. He was also very active with the Rotary and was a former District Governor. Bob survived by his daughters, Lucky Smith and Barbara Patrick; and sons, Robert Smith Jr. and William Smith.

I met Bob as a member of the Anchorage Midtown Rotary Club, and will always credit him for introducing me to my wife Julie when he brought her as a guest to one of our meetings. Bob, you will be truly missed.

As a Boy Scout I remember "Uncle Bob" singing and dancing around the campfire. I remember him going to the Boy Scout Jamboree. So much fun as we traveled by train from Seattle to New York and after the Jamboree back across the country to Salt Lake City and back to Seattle for our return to Alaska.

As a Rotarian I remember "Uncle Bob" and all the things he did for this community.
"Oh Louisiana girl won't you come out tonight, come out to night and dance by the light of the silvery moon..." Every time, over the years, when I have heard a group of Boy Scouts sing that around a camp fire vivid images of Uncle Bob singing and dancing to that tone come to me.

Rotary and Boy Scouts have lost a beloved friend in "Uncle Bob".

I knew Bob thru our relationship as members of the First American Baptist Church here in Anchorage, Bob was extremly humorous and a good friend with a big heart.

I met Bob through Rotary and always enjoyed his humor and quips. His poems were funny and quite spontaneous - I found that to be a remarkable talent. We will miss him.
