Alban Quinn Obituary

MONSIGNOR ALBAN (EDWARD) QUINN O.CARM Died peacefully in Lima, Peru on September 15th, 2010 in his 87th year and 61 years a priest. Predeceased by his parents Edward and Lillian, brothers John and Patrick, sisters Olive, Elizabeth and Mary. He will be remembered by his brothers Peter (Mavis), Frank (Rita), Richard (Lynda), sisters Theresa Nachuk (Ben), Patricia Melnike (Mel), and Letty Quinn. Loved and missed by his nieces and nephews. Monsignor Quinn was born in Toronto and attended St. Thomas Aquinas Parish School before entering the Carmelite Novitiate. He was ordained in 1949 and a year later, he left for the new Carmelite Mission in Lima, Peru, where he joined the parish of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He remained there for the next 20 years working in various capacities. In 1971, he was appointed to the role of Bishop for the Prelature of Sicuani, a region in the high Andes mountain range. While there, he developed many programmes that provided shelter and care for the impoverished and sick, as well as the building of churches and schools and a seminary. In 1993, he received the Peruvian Human Rights award for his work. His many writings and publications had a common theme, to defend life and human dignity, and to combat poverty. While in Sicuani, he celebrated his 50th anniversary in the priesthood. People from all around the region travelled miles to be part of a huge parade and wonderful Eucharistic celebration in his honour. On his retirement, he returned to Lima and later celebrated 60 years as a priest. He led an extraordinary life full of love for the people he served, always with humility. Rest in Peace and the love of Christ dear Brother, Uncle, Friend. There will be a Memorial Mass held on October 2nd, 2010 at 11 a.m. in Aurora, Ontario at Our Lady of Grace Parish, 15347 Yonge Street.

I was introduced to Albano while taking a study/exposure course on Liberation Theology in 1996. I met Albano in Sicuani at the children's rehabilitation centre he had built. Our student group, led by Joe Mihevc, spent the night in Albano's residence shared meals together and engaged in thoughtful discussions - Albano was a man who lived his faith and the Gospel in its pure meaning through his devotion & service to the poor... Albano left me with a wonderful outlook in life - his legacy will live forever in me...
