John Thomas DILLON

August 20, 1948 – June 5, 2017

Our beloved John died peacefully, following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He is mourned by his wife Marianne; children Timothy and Norah; and his sister Margaret. He had many family members, friends and colleagues in Canada and throughout the world who are saddened by his sudden death.

John worked for 44 years with Canadian and International church coalitions focusing on economic and social justice issues. A tribute to his life's work is on the Kairos Canada website: https://www.kairoscanada.org/remembering-john-dillon Visitation will take place at St. Ann's Catholic Parish, 120 First Ave., Toronto (entrance off Gerrard St.), on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. If desired, in memoriam donations to Kairos – or a social justice organization of your choice would be appreciated.

It is with some shock that I heard this evening of John's passing.
I met John first while renovating a house he was living in on Endean Avenue in a coop home. It was a time in my life when I had my own struggles. I remember him always as a kind and humble who would listen and always have the right words to say. After many years was able to reconnect with him through Kairos at a number of events and lastly at the Ottawa "Truth and Reconciliation" event. I will always remember him for his humility and what it means to be human..
My wishes that the wings of a thousand angels protect you and give you and your family strength Marianne

I am so sad to have lost a cherished colleague and friend. John was an inspiration to me and many others involved in social justice work. He was a kind and gentle man. He embodied the prophetic call to seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God. "Well done thou good and faithful servant".

Such a fine man, such a persistent advocate, such a gifted writer, and a grounded convicted person of faith. What a blessing he has been to me and many many many others. Rest in peace John, and to family members I wish you strength, peace and the comfort of friends.

John and I were classmates through high school in Sarnia. John, Vince Gianandrea and I entered St. Peter's Seminary together in 1967.After I left St. Peter's I lost direct contact with John.
I regret that.
John was always a decent person, full of integrity. His writings reflect that. He will be missed.

I will always remember John as a gentle, caring man motivated by a deep passion for social justice and the well-being of the entire Earth community. We will all miss John's keen insight, deep knowledge, and analytical skills; but even more, we will miss his kindness and compassion. John Dillon, presente para siempre!

You are deeply mourned and missed, John. In your gentle and humble way, you helped so many of us find the tools to understand the world around us, then act to make a better world for all. Thank you for that and for everything you were to so many. "Well done, good and faithful servant."

I will remember John as one of the kindest, most sincere human beings I have ever met. I first met John back in 1973 but actually came to know him best as a member of Riverdale Co-op's Board of Directors in the 1980's when I was the Co-ordinator there. John was an excellent Director (needless to say!), but I primarily remember him as being always supportive of me and my work, particularly in difficult moments. He was a beautiful soul, and my heart goes out to Marianne, Timothy and Norah. May your memories forever sustain you.
