Charles DANIEL Obituary

DANIEL, Charles William (Bill) Passed peacefully on December 5th at his home on St. Clair Avenue West in Toronto. He is survived by his four children Karen, Colleen and Robert, all living in British Columbia and David living in Ontario. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren living all across Canada and his companion Arlette Bolliger also living in Ontario. His wife Ruth Elizabeth of 61 years passed December 2008 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Bill was born and raised in Toronto where he attended Lawrence Park Collegiate and the University of Toronto. While a student at U of T, Bill was President of the Engineering society, won a senior football "T" and was winner of the 3T5 Second Mile award. At the same time, he graduated with honours in Engineering while holding down 2-part time jobs. This displayed energy would be the forbearer of a long and successful career. He began his professional career as a Petroleum Engineer with Shell Oil Company, working in the USA, Venezuela, the Netherlands, Trinidad and Canada. He assumed increasing technical and managerial responsibilities and in 1974, he became President and CEO of Shell Canada. During his career, he and his wife Ruth moved 29 times. His business activities have included Directorships with Bank of Montreal, Bechtel Canada, Bell Canada, Montreal Life Assurance, Canfor Forest Products, Norgate Minerals and Peller Wines. A man with a strong social conscience, he has participated in a broad range of community and "Second Mile" projects including chair of the annual Toronto United Way campaign, director of Wellesley hospital and chair of the first Governor General's Canadian Leadership Conference initiated by Ed Shryer. His public acknowledgements include Canadian Council of Christians and Jews Human Relations Award (1974), APEO Citizens award (1975) and the Engineering Alumni Medal (1976). He also received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Toronto (1980) and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (1982). Although a very powerful business man having had a successful career, he was first a family man. He has been very generous with family members throughout his life. He regularly brought together over 30 family members on several reunions including Caribbean and Alaska cruises. The family bonds created will last forever. Bill was very respectful and generally concerned about people in all walks of life; anyone he met in both his personal and business life was treated with genuine integrity and sincerity. He was a rear breed of gentleman who never failed to have a kind or thoughtful word. Friends may visit the TRULL "NORTH TORONTO" FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.) on Thursday, December 14th from 4 until 8 p.m. A funeral will be held on Friday, December 15th at the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church (230 St. Clair Ave. W.) at 10 a.m. In memoriam donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario on behalf of Bill. We arrived to family stories at The Rosedale Club Reception about Dad Charles William Daniel. Stories about how he has brought together his family. The special connections told from his friends in high school to business throughout Dads career. How he kept us alltogether through many family reunions over the years. Stories of his integrity, generosity, humanity to all walks of life. Compassionate and caring. When our families were young and growing Dad chose to be on boards across Canada that would allow him to travel to wherever his family was to make sure he had the time to share for all of us. He managed to spend special time to oversee our needs even when he was in need. 1981 he was in terrible back pain and was going for surgery. He could hardly walk, yet he continued to work. He arranged for our daughter Terna that had open heart surgery in 1981 to fly her to Toronto Sick Kids Hospital on the Shell Jet at sea level pressure where Dr. Bill Williams performed the Mustard technique on Terna's heart. We spent the next two months living with Mom and Dad in their home in Toronto while Terna recovered.

On the West Coast Dad was on the Canfor Board in Vancouver. In the early 80s on one of Dad's many visits. He was being interviewed on BCTV by Jack Webster a very ruthless interviewer. To the point and cutting to the quick. In some ways we were concerned for Dad but after watching the interview with Jack Webster who showed total respect for Mr. CW Daniel. It's an interview I have never forgotten. That weekend Dad invited us into Vancouver to see the Famous Peoples Players Performing with puppets under black light at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Afterwords we had the honour to meet Diane Dupuy and all the actors that had performed Liberace in the early 80s. Dad was President of Shell Canada at that time. They sponsored this incredible unforgettable theatre group from Toronto.

At Our home today hangs the picture of Dad with Founder of Famous Peoples Players Diane Dupuy, Radio and Television host Jack Webster, Canadian actor Leslie William Nielsen who was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and all the actors who were mentally handicapped performing in the play.

We had the honor when we were in Toronto at Dads Celebration of life to go to the Famous Peoples Players Theatre to have Dinner and watch them performing still today In Toronto. They have their own building. After you've had a meal, they perform in their theatre. This wonderful Community Diane created from imagining a world with no boundaries at a very young age, with her mother and now her daughter Joanne who is overseeing from the minute you've checked in your coat. The whole staff from the minute they arrive, cook and serve you dinner. Then escorted you into the theatre where they change into their costumes to perform. The most colourful fantasy entertainment that all ages can enjoy under black light. Dads picture is on this wall, among many sponsors, actors, and supporters that have helped this theatre continue to bring their story to life. Dad wasn't always just there for his family. He was there for everyone. I remember a time when We were 25 invited to a Christmas gathering for the mentally handicapped. At the time called mentally retarded. I almost didn't go feeling uncomfortable about appearing. My fears on meeting mentally disabled were put to rest when we walked into the room realizing that we were the ones with the handicap. They Greeted us with love and open arms as they just enjoyed every minute of life. I understand Diane's dream of breaking down barriers. Keep Diane and Dad's dream alive. If you get the chance go see Famous Peoples Player In Toronto.

In every phone call Dad asked about every family members well being. He covered us with grace when we were in need of it. He helped take the hurt away without asking. He was always there to offer his help in anyway. In our later years dad helped us acquire a cure that wasn't available in Canada and would be costly to our family. Marleen was cured of Hep C, 4th stage liver disease with dads help. We were honoured to spend our time with Dad, giving him help in the time of his life that was a transition for him from total independence to assisted living with caregivers while wintering in Florida in 2014. To a man that had everything and gave everything. We where humbled to share that time with Dad.

Rest In Peace if anyone deserves it it's you Dad! When emotions run high we only hope that we all take a moment to think how Dad lived his life and do him proud because he taught us well.

Your in our thoughts always
Marleen and Bob

Bill who we fondly referred to as The Manager was a lovely man and a good friend to my father, Roy Tredgett. They were at UofT Engineering together and remained friends throughout their lives. Remarkably, Bill visited my Dad regularly throughout his many years of declining health. His kindness and friendship will be remembered by all of us.
Sincere condolences to the whole Daniel family.

Bill Daniel and I never met but he did have an incredible impact on my life and I want his family to know that he was the person as described in his obituary. It has been over 33 years since I worked for Shell Canada but I have always remembered what he did for me. I was a junior employee at Shell Canada in Toronto (having just relocated to Toronto from Sarnia) when the company made the decision to now relocate to Calgary. At this same time our daughter became very ill (she is fine now) and we could not take the relocation to Calgary (the best doctor to treat her was in London Ontario). It was a very difficult time in the life of our family and I wrote a very personal letter and appealed to Bill Daniel to help us on some Shell Canada related issues. We never spoke nor met but doors were opened to help us after he received my letter and I always respected the warm heart and compassion shown to us. Sincere sympathy to his family and his loss is a great loss to us all.

LIKE Bob Astley, I got to know Bill Daniel when he was a valued director of The Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada. I knew Bill as a helpful and forthright business executive, and a man of the highest sense of business ethical standards. I extend to his family my deepest sympathy in their loss, and am sure that Bill will be remembered as a wonderful example of integrity and warmth. I am sorry that my health no longer permits me to consider driving to Toronto for his memorial.

Bill is remembered both as an oustanding director of Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada and as a warm, genuine and caring individual. While I served as an executive at Mutual Life and later as President, Bill was always encouraging, thoughtful and articulate. It was a great pleasure to see him at various functions in Toronto after he retired from the board. I will remember him fondly as a mentor and an outstanding Canadian. Bob Astley, Waterloo, Ontario
