Horst KROLL Obituary

KROLL, Horst Canadian auto racing legend died suddenly at home of natural causes on Thursday, October 26, 2017 in his 81st year. Dear husband to Hildegard. Loving father to Birgit Kroll. Brother to Renate Streubel and Krista Silbersack. Son of the late Emile Kroll and Elisabeth Jany. Uncle to Petr, Guido, Stefan and Holk. Born in Germany, Kroll came to Canada at the age of 20. For more than 25 years he engraved his name in Canadian motor-sport history. As a driver, team owner and car builder, Kroll competed at some of the highest levels of racing in North America. Kroll won the Canadian Driving Championship in 1968. From his small auto repair shop in West Hill, Ontario, Horst manufactured a fleet of 18 Altona Formula Vees, his cars winning the 1969 Canadian Formula Vee Championship. Over the years Kroll provided auto repairs, specialized vehicle restorations and personal racing services. Of the many achievements, his biggest accomplishment was winning the 1986 Can-Am Championship, after being runner up the previous year and third in 1984. Anyone who knows Horst will tell you, the one thing that stood out is the never say quit attitude with which he approached every race and his life. The family will receive friends at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. E., Agincourt (east of Kennedy Rd.), on Thursday, November 2nd from 5 - 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held in the Ogden Chapel on Friday at 1 p.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Toronto Wildlife Centre.

We are saddened to learn of Horst's passing. Always a generous and energetic person, we remember Horst for not only his racing endeavour but his enthusiasm for Cross County Skiing, cycling and Rving. Fond memories, indeed.

Our thoughts are with you, Birgit and Hildegard.

I feel an empty place in this world. Horst has made an impression in my life that has made me who I am. Living with and learning with him and Julie in the mid 1980s had open my eyes to big Life living, enjoying life to the fullest every day! I still live by this. I was also taught how to drive in a way to not wear expensive parts, I have past this on. Such as using the brakes to slow down rather than down gearing. Down gear to speed up instead. Learned to live. Thank you Horst with all my love, condolences to Family and Friends. Also I am very proud that Birgit did everything in her power to ensure Horst lived out his last years at home with all his memory's close at hand, and a phone he has had as long as the condo, surely without those he would have left us much sooner. God bless you! I am a nurse with advanced Geriatric diploma. There is no place like Home . So thankful Horst lived where he wanted to be!

I can't find the appropriate words to say what it was like working with Horst for many years..maybe "interesting", "surprising", but he was ever the same..."a unique character" and lovable. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear of Horst's passing. I saw him race several times at Mid-Ohio and followed his CanAm career. I can still see him riding around on an electric powered scooter the garage area with his driver suit. He and his family are in my thoughts.

My condolences to the family. As a fellow competitor in the earlier years of Horst's racing endeavours, I recall a cheerful but intense driver who always had time for a little 'consultation" about a new circuit if asked. Sorry to miss the memorial as I will be in the UK. If a follow-up celebration of his life gets arranged, I would like to be invited.
