SHELLEY EBY Obituary

SHELLEY ANN EBY May 16, 1952 - December 14, 2013 It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Shelley Eby (née Smith). She passed away peacefully in her sleep, the morning of December 14th, at her home in Toronto, after a courageous struggle with cancer. Shelley was born in Montreal, but grew up with her three brothers in Etobicoke. It was there that she met John, the love of her life. They attended Richview Collegiate together and both completed degrees at Queen's University before living in Washington, DC, New Jersey and starting a family. A gifted educator, she worked teaching ESL wherever she lived. Moving to Surrey, England in 1991, Shelley taught adult literacy while devoting herself to looking after her family. She enjoyed her history, book clubs, travel and country walks while forging lasting friendships during five years overseas. Upon returning to Toronto, Shelley worked as a supervisor in the LINC program in Toronto, before retiring in 2004. After retirement Shelley split her time between Southampton, ON; Toronto, ON; and Antigua, Guatemala, where she made a new set of deep friendships and founded Developing Scholars, a charity dedicated to increasing education opportunities to poor children in rural Guatemala. Devoted wife to John Eby. Loving mother to Gordon (Carly), Duncan (Monika) and Cameron (Katherine). Beloved Gram-Grams to Annalise, Dylan and Michaela. Cherished daughter to Katherine 'Kaye' Smith (née Corkum); sister to Jeffery (Ilona), Graham (Sandrine) and Cameron (Elyn), sister-in-law to Carolyn Blacklock (Jim) and Allan Eby (Betty). Wonderful aunt to her 12 nieces and nephews and 14 great-nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her father, John 'Jack' Smith. She will be remembered for her selflessness, humour, love of life, and courageous spirit. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20. A Service of Remembrance will be held in the chapel on Saturday, December 21 at 10:30 a.m. If desired and in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Shelley, may be made to Developing Scholars, 38 Cheltenham Avenue, Toronto M4N 1P7 or a charity of your choice. Shelley will be missed by her many friends in Antigua Guatemala. Always with a smile, and a kind word for everyone she knew and met.
My heart goes out to John as well, as Shelley was truly the love of his life, and treated Shelley like gold, and we all admired his devotion.
