Dan Douglas-Crampton Obituary

DAN DOUGLAS-CRAMPTON March 20, 1924 - March 3, 2010 Dan passed away peacefully in Cranbrook, British Columbia on March 3, 2010. He was born in Warren, Ontario in 1924; a town named after his grandfather George Warren. He was the youngest of 4 children and spent the first few years of his childhood hunting, canoeing and riding horses. As soon as he turned 18, Dan joined the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII and served aboard the HMCS Dunver until the end of the war. He met and married Bridget Myfanwy Jane Appleton in England in 1947 and brought her back to Canada as his bride. They had 6 children David, Nicki, Karen, Stephanie, Fiona and Katrina. Dan was a Bush Pilot for several years in Northern Ontario and became an accomplished Horseman and Trainer whose horses competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico. His prize stallion Himeryk sired several horses whose progeny are still in the RCMP Musical Ride today. He had a great love of animals and the family home, Tarmoncarra, was always bustling with the activity that only 6 children and countless pets and farm animals could produce. Dan was widowed in 1991, and a few years later moved to a beautiful ranch outside Kimberley, British Columbia where he lived for the rest of his life. He made frequent visits to see family in Ontario, Calgary and Vancouver. Dan lived a very full life, and will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his children and their families, as well as his 17 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Life held at Elk Ridge Ranch, 8740 Findlay Road, Cranbrook, British Columbia on Saturday, March 6, 2 p.m. onwards. A second Celebration of Life will be held in Ontario at a later date. Announcement to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the MS Society or the SPCA. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

March 29th 2010

Dear David, Nicki, Stephie, Fiona and Katrina,

This is a very overdue message, but in no way reduces the thoughts we have had for you all.

Well, what can be said about a ‘larger than life’ character … Danny to me was ‘strength’ in mind as well as body and someone who on first meeting was instantly respected; an interested, inquiring and hugely fun person to be with….I only wish we had been able to meet more often.

You will all be missing a wonderful, caring father, and I am sure it isn’t an easy time as one realises that you will no longer be able to hear that distinctive voice on the phone.

We both send much love to you all, and hope to be able to have as many of you as possible come and visit soon.

Jane

Uncle Dan

One of the best; The patriarch of the family; A role model to so many; who lived life to the fullest, with energy, imagination, enthusiasm, humour, generosity and love, and who, like his mother, gave so much of himself to maintaining family ties. It is hard to believe he is gone. He leaves a huge void and will be so greatly missed.
