DAVID SMILEY Obituary

SMILEY, DAVID Our dear friend and neighbour David Smiley passed away on November 8, 2021. Our sorrow is with his wife Ellen Vera Allen, son Eric, sisters Linda and Donna, and the Toronto Island and Ottawa Round Lake communities he shared his life and generosity with. David loved to dance. And although he had little rhythm, he danced to the sparkle of possibilities; the possibility of advancing social justice and building stronger communities. As a photographer, David documented the long march of the women's movement, the struggle to build stronger unions, the dangers of Litton Industries cruise missile manufacturing, and the disruption the Billy Bishop airport make to Island and city life. David also helped form the Toronto Island and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations Friendship Group. The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation are the treaty holders of the Island. David immersed himself in their history, ceremonies, natural medicines and worked to highlight the knowledge they have to offer us if we listen. His talents also swirled in the kitchen with fresh-baked bread, homemade jams, exceptional Chinese-inspired dishes, foraged morels, and salmon gravlax cured in a secret underground lair. How he will be missed by Ellen and Eric, sisters Linda and Donna, niece Shannon Ieria, partner Dean, their lovely girls Sloan and Quinn, sister-in-law Joanne-Marie Alexander, niece Janet Allen Merrifield, her husband Jay, their children Troy and Zoe, and David's vast and diverse network of friends. Although David was tired as he battled lung and liver cancer he continued to cycle sandwiches made by Toronto islanders to Portland Place for the Spadina-Fort York Community Care Program four weeks before he died. What a dedicated and generous spirit we've had among us. David would be delighted that a good old Irish wake will be held in his memory at the Algonquin Island Association on November 27th at 2 p.m. You'll need proof of vaccination and in case numbers force us to spill out of the club, dress as if you're indulging David in his beloved practice of ice fishing. We'll clink a toast of his favourite scotch to commemorate the husband, father, and friend who enriched all of our lives. If you are able, please make a donation in David's memory to St. Andrew's-by-the-Lake Church which does so much diverse work to help strengthen the Island community that David loved. http://www.standrewbythelake.com/ways-to-donate.html

Dear Donna, Linda, Ellen and Eric, I am very sorry to hear of David´s passing. As they say, only the good die young. I have memories of David´s butterfly collection when he was a boy, his love for photography, his wedding and mangos! David introduced me to this succulent fruit which I still enjoy. Even though he was older than me and I didn´t see him often, I am left with the impression of his curiosity and energy to do new and interesting things. From the comments I have read, my cousin, your brother, partner , Dad and friend was a kind and empathic individual with a strong sense of community and caring. What a loss his passing is for so many and yet what a legacy he has left behind. Take care and love each other.

Dear Ellen and Eric and rest of family. Sending love and courage. I was so happy everytime Eric came to visit Arcadia He used to live next door to me when we first moved into Arcadia. Having a hard time accepting that he is no longer in human form. Blessings to you all, Irena

To Ellen and Eric, my family and I send you our heartfelt condolences for the loss of dear David. He was a truly good person who at every turn tried to help those in need, in whatever way he could. I shall forever be grateful to David for the times he showed genuine concern during rough times in our lives. He then promptly acted upon it, which helped turn things around. David was a true artist, a creative and energetic soul. We are priviledged to have had him in our lives, though far too briefly. Maya Toman and Family.

Sending all my love to Ellen and Eric and David's family and many friends. It's a terrible loss to them and to the wider community. I was privileged to know David for a very long time and to see the breadth and depth of his commitment to causes and to community. He was a leader but also worked hard at the frontlines. He forged a strong relationship with the Mississaugas of the Credit. He brought food to the hungry. He spoke truth to power. He lived a full life and many of my most vivid memories are spending time with David on the ice on Toronto Island. I will miss him greatly but carry those memories forward and try my best to honour them in my own work.
