Edward Prokipchuk Obituary

EDWARD JAMES PROKIPCHUK M.D., F.R.C.P. (C), F.A.C.P . Passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at St. Michael's Hospital, in his 80th year. Born on August 31st, 1929 in Toronto, Ed was the only child of Ukrainian immigrants, Alexander and Mary. After graduating from Humberside Collegiate he entered the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Medicine, and graduated in 1954. Ed undertook graduate studies in Montreal, London, Ontario, and Toronto and in 1960 obtained his Fellowship in Internal Medicine. In 1961 he was a Fellow in Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. Upon his return to Canada in 1963, Ed began a long and fulfilling clinical and teaching career in Gastroenterology at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, where he was Chief of Gastroenterology for many years. He became an Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto in 1973 and in 1995 he received a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Toronto for his contribution to the development of Gastroenterology in Toronto. He also received a Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. Failing health forced Ed to retire from St. Michael's Hospital in 1997 after serving there for 34 years. During his retirement, he continued to pursue his passion for medicine; reading medical journals, as well as books on history and politics and enjoying listening to classical music. Ed had been diagnosed with kidney disease in his early 30's. His life span and achievements far exceeded his expectations and hopes and he was always thankful. Ed was the cherished husband of Mary (nee Jacobs) for 31 years, dear father of Debbie (Mark Ackley) and of son David. Proud grandfather of Scott, Lauren, and Jay (in memoriam) Ackley. Ed will be fondly remembered by cousins in Detroit, Michigan, Madison, Wisconsin and Toronto, and in Toronto by in-laws Colin and Kathy Jacobs, Tracey, Tegan, Lindsey, Owen and Emmett. He will be missed by his life-long and loyal friends, Bill and Rose Gedz of Woodbridge, as well as friends, colleagues and patients in Toronto and across Canada. Special thanks to all the St. Michael's Hospital staff who cared for Ed throughout his many and various health problems. Special thanks to the staff and nurses in the Renal Dialysis Unit where Ed was treated with compassion and friendly affection for almost fifteen years. Special thanks, too, to Toronto Rehab Staff, to CCAC care giver Simone and to Nurse Jecel (14th floor/St. Michael's Hospital) in Ed's final hours. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations to the St. Michael's Hospital Foundation / Dialysis Unit or a charity of your choice. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. (at Windermere, east of Jane subway) on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 for visitation from 9-11 a.m. Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel at 11 a.m. Interment has taken place.

I never met Dr Prokipchuk but I heard his name in stories all of my life. He saved my mother's life when she was a teenager, and was her doctor for almost three decades. He met my Dad when they married and helped my Mom change her meds so that my siblings and I wouldn't suffer birth defects. He also eventually got her off her meds completely and she is still healthy. Now I'm in medical school, and hope someday to have as positive an impact on someone's life as Dr Prokipchuk had on my Mom's. I just wanted to say that I appreciate all he did for my family, and how sorry I am for your loss.

There are few people who you meet in life that leave their indelible mark in your soul. In the fall of 1986 I was flown from a small hospital in Northern Ontario to St. Mikes suffering from an extreme case of Crohns disease. For the 5 months I spent there "The Prok" was my doctor. He helped me through the darkest hours of my life and with his surgical and nursing teams they brought me back emotionally and physically to life. He had great understanding and compassion for his patients and he helped show me the way through it all. I will never forget this man who did so much not only to bring me renewal but also for the thousands of others he cared for.

To the Prokipchuk Family. Long ago Ed and I were mentored into the field of gastroenterology by Paul O'Sullivan. In this process Ed and I became friends and remained in touch from time to time as Ed contributed to the development of our specialty in Toronto and I did the same at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. He was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor and an early leader in his field. Even after these many years he will be missed.

A shock to read about Dr. Ed's passing. My parents met him while he was doing his fellowship in Baltimore, where they had taken my 15 year old brother looking for medical help with his lymphoma. Dr. Ed immediately befriended his Canadian patients, driving my parents to and from the hospital, offering his home and friendship. He asked collegues to donate blood for my brother, because at the time you had to pay for transfusions unless you could replace the blood used. We were very thankful to Dr Ed. When he returned to Canada, my parents and our family continued our friendship. Dr Ed was one of the most giving persons I had met. Debbie do you remember that you were the Junior Bridesmaid at our wedding? We lost touch with Dr Ed but often wondered how he and his family were. I am happy to read about his accomplishments in his field, and am sorry that we have lost such a wonderful, giving man.
Our condolences to the family.
