MAGDER, Dr. John - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John who died peacefully at home on Thursday, March 8, 2012 in his 81st year. John leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years, Eleanor. He is survived by his four children Lee Anne, Michelle, Scott and Gillian, their spouses Joe, Dale, Debbie and John, his seven grandchildren Austin, Alex, Jamie, Dylan, Jake, Sylvie and Luke and his "puppy-boy" Max. Born in Toronto, John attended and played basketball at Jarvis Collegiate. John graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School - Class of 5T6. For over thirty years John enjoyed his Family Medicine practice in Scarborough which included working late nights in the emergency room at Toronto East General Hospital and assisting the elderly at Providence Villa. John cared deeply for his patients. In the early 1990's John took on the position of Medical Consultant with the Ministry of Health until his retirement. In his later years John focused his attention on his family and their farm property in Orono. Throughout his medical career John was passionately involved with a number of organizations including: the newly formed Ontario New Democratic Party (Vice- President), Planned Parenthood, Providence Villa (Board of Directors), Toronto East General Hospital (Chief of Family Practice), Hospital Council of Metropolitan Toronto - Medical Advisory Committee (Chairman). At his 50th reunion for the Class of 5T6, John noted his proudest accomplishment was "appearing before the Hall Commission (1961) in active support of Universal Health Care". His achievements will live on. At John's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Stephen Lewis Foundation (www.stephenlewisfoundation.org).
