MANIATES, Maria Rika - Passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at the Toronto Grace Health Centre where she was receiving palliative care for cancer. Beloved daughter of the late Sophia and Euripides. Cherished sister of Julia and John, Denny and Mary. Much loved by her godson, Timothy and all her nieces and nephews: Stephanie and Stephen, Evi and Tanya, Natalie and Cameron and David. Delighted great-aunt to Gabrielle, Sonya, Sebastian, Nicholas and Nina. Professor Emerita at the University of Toronto, Rika joined the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1965 and was appointed to the School of Graduate Studies in 1966. She was named a Fellow of Victoria College in 1979 and held cross-appointments to the Centre for Study of Drama and the Centre for Medieval Studies. A distinguished musicologist, she was visiting professor at Columbia University and author of several seminal works on Renaissance music. As a consultant, she assisted such organizations as the American Musicological Society, the International Musicological Society, the Renaissance Society of America, the CBC and the Ontario Arts Council. She served as Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, and Vice-Dean of the School of Graduate Studies in the University of Toronto from 1990 to 1995. After her retirement in 1995, she avidly continued her scholarly pursuits. Visitation at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. West (2 stop lights west of Yonge St.), on Sunday, October 23 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Funeral Service to be held at ST. THOMAS'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 383 Huron St. (south of Bloor St. W.), on Monday, October 24 at 10:30 a.m. Committal at Mount Pleasant Cemetery following the service. The family extends its deepest thanks to the palliative care staff at Toronto Grace, whom Rika called her "angels of mercy." In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to Toronto Grace Health Centre (Palliative Care Unit) would be greatly appreciated.
