Mercie E. McCreary

MERCIE E. McCREARY (nee MOORE) With great love and wonderful memories, the family of Mercie McCreary announces her peaceful passing on March 13, 2009, in her 99th year. Mercie, born in Toronto, was the darling, only child of Evelyn and Samuel Moore. She attended Branksome Hall and the University of Toronto where she majored in English. Mercie was a life member of Rosedale United Church. Mercie will be remembered as a lady of grace, courage and resilience that helped her through the premature death of her 3 cherished husbands: Alex Carrick (WWII), Dr. Bay Verner and Clifford McCreary, all of Toronto. Mercie displayed her deep and abiding faith in difficult times as she was predeceased by her step-daughter Peg Rombough and grandson Danny Carrick. When her own children John Carrick and Judy Wilson passed away a few years ago, the affects of dementia kept her unaware of her tremendous loss. Mercie lived her life fully and was a powerful influence on her extended family. Her remaining family includes her daughter-in-law Kathleen Carrick, grandchildren: Mary (Bob) Wilkinson, Bonnie Ryder, John (Jane) Carrick, Kelly (Sarah) Carrick, Wendy (John) Meiklejohn, Howard Rombough and 11 great-grandchildren. Mercie enriched the lives of her family and friends with love, kindness, fun and a contagious sense of humour that lasted throughout her life. She was an understanding listener, gave wide counsel and was positive regarding people and events. She modeled "an expectancy of good" in her life. Mercie enjoyed reading, good theatre and her garden. Some of her happier times were spent at her beloved "Lisnacloon Island" in Georgian Bay. Mercie lived her last challenging years the same way she lived her whole life - with dignity, elegance and an undaunted spirit. There ever was a "Sparkle in her eyes". Mercie stimulated intellectual curiosity and shared her understanding of life as she mentored 3 generations of her family - for her family it is the end of an era. Our family is ever grateful to Helen and Fran, Mercie's devoted caregivers for the past several years. We also thank the staff at Parkview Home in Stouffville for their compassionate support.
