MERLIN MARION ANDREW September 19, 1915 - October 19, 2013 Daughter of the late John Burford Wallace Andrew and Eva Mary Andrew (nee Nichols). Merlin was born and educated in London, England where she drove an ambulance during the Blitz. Immediately following WWII, she joined the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) as a civilian contractor, providing humanitarian aid in Displaced Persons Camps throughout Europe. She lead an active and adventurous life that spanned 4 continents, finally settling in Toronto where her superb command of the English language was put to the test as a proofreader for the Toronto Star, a post she held until her retirement. Merlin was passionate about animal rights and was involved with many local and international groups dedicated to their welfare. In 1970, she founded Action Volunteers for Animals and later sat on the Board of Directors for The Toronto Humane Society. Good health and a brilliant, sharp mind allowed her to enjoy life in her own home and splendid garden until a short month before her passing. She is survived by her 4 cats: Kipling, Esme, Moley and Kato, who are now residing at Haven of the Heart Animal Sanctuary, where Merlin volunteered for more than 30 years. A memorial celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on November 9th at the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, 115 Simpson Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations to any animal charity would be most welcome.
