MICHAEL ARTHUR OVERS Father, husband, friend, mentor, leader and Founder of Pizza Pizza Limited. On the morning of March 31, 2010, Michael Overs, a beloved husband and father, grandfather, businessman, philanthropist and friend, passed away peacefully with family by his side. Michael was the Founder and CEO of Pizza Pizza Limited, which owns and operates Pizza Pizza and Pizza 73 restaurants. Born in Toronto, 1939, the second child of Arthur and Edna Overs, Michael grew up in the Beaches where he developed his keen entrepreneurial spirit. By the age of fourteen, he had a longtime paper route and was always involved in a business venture in some way. Michael left home at seventeen and immediately started working full-time. His love of community involvement, hard work and entrepreneurship led him to open a small pizza restaurant at Parliament and Wellesley in 1967. With the help of his family, friends, co-workers, employees and partners, Michael was successful in growing the restaurant into Canada's leading pizza chain, notable for its constant innovation and popular telephone jingle '967-11-11.' Michael is survived by his wife Lilian, son Ian, daughter Liza, their mother Lia, three grandchildren, his sister Kathleen, and numerous nieces and nephews. His son-in-law Paul Goddard, an Executive at Pizza Pizza Limited, has assumed the interim CEO role for the continuance of Michael's legacy. For those who had the pleasure to know him, Michael was a true renaissance man, whose passions reached beyond business to art, design, history, cinema, his two dogs and his many philanthropic projects at home and abroad. A charismatic and devoted businessman and mentor, Michael was a father figure to many and was passionate about helping others. He felt personally responsible for the livelihoods of the many men and women who worked and supported him on his journey in building Pizza Pizza. The family wishes to thank everyone who touched his life and is grateful for the outpouring of sympathy they have received. The Overs family will hold a private memorial to celebrate his life. A separate, informal memorial reserved for Pizza Pizza and Pizza 73 employees, partners and franchises will also be held. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their sympathies are requested to please consider making a contribution to Pizza Pizza's 'Slices for Smiles' Fund which benefits Children's Miracle Network (email: [email protected] with your full contact details and indicate that you would like to make a donation on behalf of Michael Overs or visit www.pizzapizza.ca). Alternatively, donations can be made to a charity of the donor's choice on behalf of Michael Overs.
