I am alive today because of Dr Filler! I was born with omphalocele and he saved my life with a surgery he created at my birth.

Today many babies get this surgery and survive.

RIP Dr. Filler, you will live on in each of who's lives you saved.

Saved my life in '91. Was the only doctor who was straightforward with me, at 12 I appreciated that very much.

My deepest condolences to the Filler family.

Dr. Filler saved my life. He was my surgeon in the early 1980's when I was battling ulcerative colitis as a young child-teenager. I encountered many complications and the compassion that he showed me and my family will always be remembered. I knew I was in the best hands and trusted him completely. I ended up working at Sick Kids in the 1990's and treasured the times that I would run into him as I was waiting for the bus, or in the hospital halls. Somehow, in that big city of Toronto, I ran into him and Mrs. Filler many times throughout my adult life. I recall each encounter fondly. I always walked away knowing that I had been lucky to have him as my doctor, and I sensed how fortunate they were to have each other.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have shed many tears over the loss of Dr. Filler. He was a kind man and made me feel seen during times when I was disappearing, as well as in times of health. His type of compassion is rare. He will always have a special place in my heart.

I was a Third Year Resident on his service at the Boston Children's Hospital in 1974 - 1975. He was probably the most energetic and enthusiastic attending I have ever had. He continually took a personal interest in me and made sure I was in the OR as often as possible doing cases while he "assisted." He innovated constantly. TPN and aortic suspension for tracheomalacia were just two that happened while I was there. He was always sincerely interested in everyone he met. After a few words with Dr. Filler you always walked away feeling a little taller, a better person.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Filler for several years at the Hospital For Sick Children in various roles. He was a cherished doctor, respected colleague and devoted family man. He was larger than life with a wonderful sense of humor and a fierce dedication to his patients and their families. I benefited from his generous mentoring and guidance. What a privilege for me so early in my career to work beside such a talented individual. He will be fondly remembered by countless individuals. SickKids was strengthened by his leadership and commitment to the Department of Surgery.

I had the extreme privilege to work with Bob quite a few years ago when I was Head of the Anesthesia Dept at Sickkids. Not only did he transform the Dept of Surgery but he was extremely supportive of our Department and helped us enormously. This was another example of his ability to work with others to facilitate progress for the benefit of all. David J Steward.

Dr. Filler saved our son Nicholas life when at a young age he had Diverticulitis and only at the last possible moment of life when he arrived at Sick Kids hospital Dr. Filler thought it might be Appendix but moved across the chest to discover the real reason when operating.
We, as a family are so fortunate to have been in his hands as so many were.
A soft wonderful and truly special man.

Many old and pleasant memories of Bob are crowding into my head on hearing the news of his passing. He almost equaled his mother, my Aunt Lily, in longevity, God bless him. She and Uncle Ben were my favorite older relatives as I was growing up. Bob inherited their kindness and sense of humor. I reckon that it has been at least 35 years since I last saw him, and Stevie and Richard probably don't remember me at all, but I felt a strong connection to Bob and his brothers and send you all tender condolences.

Robert Filler goes on. He lives in the life of our son Robert. Dr Filler saved Robert's life with a special operation at Sick Kids. We named Robert after Dr Robert. Our son wrote this song. Not only does it represent Dr Filler's influence but is also a very close reflection of our human fight against a world struggle against covid 19...Our son sings" I don't wanna die in a hospital.." and thanks to Dr Filler he didn't. Dr Filler we thank you for saving our son's life.
