Rudolf VOLK Obituary

Reverend Father Rudolf Philip VOLK

On Friday, February 27, 2015, on his own terms after a brief illness, our beloved Rudy passed away with family present. He will be remembered with humour and love for the legacy that he left for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends and parishioners. Rudy enjoyed a full, varied and resilient life marked by contributions and success as a family man, a businessman and a priest. Born September 22, 1930 in Toronto, Rudy was the son of immigrant parents (Wendelin and Adeline) and brother to Eugene. Rudy grew up in Montreal, where he met the love of his life Margaret Doreen Dwyer, whom he married on April 11, 1953. Being good Catholics, they produced six children in ten years. After starting their married lives in Halifax, the family made stops in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Mexico City and Omaha, before settling for good in the Toronto area. Rudy built a successful career in business, starting out as an x-ray serviceman with GE (General Electric). He then joined Addressograph Multigraph and quickly rose through the ranks. Rudy lost his job in the early 1980s, but started again as a graphic arts salesman. His life took another turn after Doreen's sudden death in 1987; a year later he entered the seminary and was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1990. He served numerous parishes in the Toronto area, culminating in his happiest years as a priest at St. Patrick's Parish in Mississauga. Rudy touched many lives throughout his careers. Fiercely determined, he demonstrated an amazing ability to reinvent himself and to meet each challenge life threw at him. He excelled as a spiritual leader, as he was able to empathize and counsel so many due to his experience as a husband, father and businessman. Rudy is predeceased by his parents and his brother Gene, his wife Doreen and son Bill. He leaves behind his children Carole, Susan, Tom, Peter and Theresa; sons and daughters-in-law Wendy, Joanne, Jodene and Christopher; his grandchildren Erin (Brian), Jared, Lauren (Eric), Avi (Merav), Sarah (Gabe), Graham, Hannah, Ryan, Charlotte, Natalie, Duncan, Megan, Jacob and Anna and great-grandchildren Dor and Harper. Family are grateful to the caregivers at Trillium Health Centre (Mississauga General Hospital). Friends may call at St. Patrick's Church, 921 Flagship Drive, Mississauga, from 2-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2015  at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church (Mississauga), followed by a reception. A private interment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. For those who wish, donations to the Scarborough Hospital Foundation (tshfoundation.ca) would be appreciated. I shall miss Fr. Rudy very much. We first met at Blessed Trinity Parish. I very much admired his generosity in taking on the demands of the priesthood when he could have retired and relaxed. Since then, we became good friends often enjoying good conversation at lunch. He often addressed me as "Lady Grace" but I shall always think of him warmly as "Father Rudy", he of gentle wisdom and warm humour.

We have such fond memories of Rudy and Doreen with our bridge club. They were so unconditionally in love with each other and their family. Any time we saw Rudy he greeted us with open arms. We are thinking about all of you during your time of sadness. Rudy leaves a legacy of caring love. I remember Doreen saying "lighten up Rudy" He is with The Light of The World now

I remember Rudy Volk when he was part of Canada's graphic arts industry. Rudy and my late father, John Young, publisher of PrintAction were good friends. Rudy was a true gentleman, and when he left graphic arts to find his true vocation as a priest, those that knew Rudy were not overly surprised. God Bless you Rudy.

To the entire Volk Family:
It is with heartfelt love and sadness that I write this note to you. I met Fr. Rudy in July 1997 when my beloved husband died. I do not know how I would have survived without Father Rudy's grace and humour during that time. He became my Pastor, Mentor and Friend.
When I moved to NOTL, we lost contact. In August 2014 I received a phone call from Fr. Rudy asking if he could stop by for a visit. I invited him to lunch and we were in constant contact ever since. When I moved to Burlington I picked him up in December to have lunch with me one day. Later I had a friend drop him off at his home. We were scheduled to have dinner together at the Musket Restaurant on Thursday, the day he will be buried. I guess he will be celebrating with God and his angels instead. Bless you and thank you Father Rudy for all you have given me and done for me from 1997 to now. May I thank the Volk family for unselfishly sharing Father Rudy with us.
