SHIRLEY ZINMAN Obituary

ZINMAN, SHIRLEY ELIZABETH (nee WHITTAKER) Daughter of Kenneth Robertson Whittaker and Gladys Durkin, passed away on February 15, 2020, at Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, Toronto. Shirley was in her 75th year and had been living with Type One Diabetes for seventy years when she left her older brother Paul, scores of friends and Shirley, her pet parrot, a Sunrise Conure. She was a Rotarian, involved with the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Healthcare, a supporter of and participant in Variety Village, volunteered at the CNIB, was a Probation Volunteer for the Ministry of Correctional Services and advocated for and generously supported her community. She was a member of The Funeral Advisory and Memorial Society and as a member of The Associates of the Toronto Symphony, ran "Grass Roots" for a number of years. She taught in Gimly, Manitoba, before obtaining her Master of Education at the University of Toronto after which she was a Special Education Teacher and Librarian at St. Joseph School in Markham before retiring in 2000. Although she died less than six kilometres from where she was born, Shirley travelled the world and established important relationships wherever she went. She enjoyed driving her unique, custom-built, open-air, somewhat noisy, roadster before having to move to the far more civilized 2015 Miata because oxygen therapy was required. While still driving the "Pistol", she was a member of the Morgan Sports Car Club of Canada, the MG Car Club Toronto and more recently a member of the FIAT 500 Club of Canada. A teacher, mentor, friend and good neighbour, she was courageous, a rebel and to many, a hero. She will be missed. As we look forward to a future without Shirley, we are grateful to those health care professionals who helped her fight her medical battles at the Diabetes Clinic at University Health Network Toronto General Hospital, The Eye Clinic at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, North York General Hospital in her last battle and finally to those who eased her transition into and through the final stages of her life at Bridgepoint Active Healthcare. We thank you. For those who would like to make a donation in her memory, any of the above would appreciate your support.

I only knew Shirley remotely through chasing her fantastic special car on electronic media. when I finally 'caught' her we had a delightful and cheerful relationship through a couple international difficulties and while I'll miss the occasional communication with her, her treasured vehicle is well taken care of

Shirley and I had a fun relationship. I kept her feet in check and she kept me in check. I was away from Canada in her last days, I am back now.will try to keep that spirit alive!, I enjoyed her company and most of all her power. We talked about everything in our 15 year relationship. I learned. She laughed!,
I will miss her more than I know!,,

As members of the Trillium Miata Club, Carolyn and I are so sad to hear of Shirley Zinmans passing. We met Shirley at the very first Monthly TMC Mtg we attended in Oct. 2014. Shirley was the guest speaker then and talked proudly of her hand-built from the ground up sports car. We were novice sports car owners ourselves and very surprised and impressed with this lady that took on such an enterprise. From that short moment in time when our paths crossed, we are sure that Shirley lived a full and rewarding life. May she rest in peace.
