Frederick Jaffe Obituary

DR. FREDERICK ALBERT JAFFE With the same quiet grace and dignity with which he lived his entire life, Dr. Frederick Albert Jaffe passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Frederick was born in Frankfurt, Germany on August 22, 1920 and at the age of 15, moved to boarding school in England. During his first year at Cambridge medical school, along with other German nationals, he was interned and transported by ship to Canada. It was during his transatlantic journey that he met Dr. Gregory Jarvis, who would become his life long friend. Upon his release from internment camp two years later, Frederick attended McGill University and thereafter enjoyed a long and distinguished career in Toronto as a pathologist with a passion for forensic science. Dr. Jaffe, former chief pathologist of Queensway General Hospital and medical director of the Centre for Forensic Science, was the author of many articles and the book 'Guide to Pathological Evidence'. Frederick was predeceased by his wife Dr. Doris Jaffe, his son Alexander and his younger sister Elizabeth. Frederick will be deeply missed by his wife Kristina Landstrom-Jaffe, his sons Charles and his spouse Rasa, Paul and his spouse Barbara and his daughter Iona and her companion Rob. Frederick also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Emma, Kate and Alexander; and his niece and nephew Michelle and Ron (Mary). The family of Dr. Jaffe wish to thank Dr. Besik, Dr. Short and the incredible nursing staff at the palliative care unit of the Credit Valley Hospital for their care and compassion. Our thanks also go to Marleen and Ann from the Canadian Red Cross. No service will be held, however, donations can be made in memory of Frederick to The Healing Cycle Foundation (www.thehealingcycle.ca). A husband, father and grandpapa who we will love and miss all of our lives.

Although I didn't have the privilege of knowing Dr. Jaffe as well as my wife (Diane), I did enjoy his company on several occasions. I remember him as a warm, gentle spirit, with a keen intellect and a wonderful sense of humor. To Kristina and the rest of the family, I am so sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Jaffe through his wife Kristina when we were both at school together some years ago. I have so many wonderful memories of him and his family.

He was a warm, sweet man who shared his love for life with everyone he met. I had many a good meal with Fred and Kristina in their home, surrounded by good friends, a warm fireplace and interesting conversation that spanned a wide array of topics. Sometimes to the chagrin of others when the subject turned to medicine and the finer points of pathology. I quite enjoyed listening to his stories for they were always colourful and I never failed to learn something!

I remember lunches at the millhouse, trees shedding their leaves in autumn, family and pets running about in a joyous chaos. He loved every minute of it.
So did I.

I am grateful to have gotten to know him and his family. My heart goes out to all of you. My life was made richer for having known him and you. The world is a little dimmer for having lost him but he lives on in all of you. In his humour, his love of a good Chinese meal and his adventuresome spirit that never stopped looking for something new to learn or try.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Be gentle and kind to yourselves and each other.
