Doris McCARTHY Obituary

DORIS JEAN McCARTHY C.M, O.O., F.O.C.A&D., L.LD., R.C.A., O.S.A, C.S.P.W.C. Passed away peacefully at her Scarborough home on Thursday, November 25, 2010 in her 101st year. Predeceased by her parents, George Arnold McCarthy and Mary Jane (Jenny) Moffatt McCarthy, her brothers Ken McCarthy and Douglas McCarthy, her nephew Dale Douglas McCarthy; survived by first nephew and nieces, Brian McCarthy, Patricia (McCarthy) Jones, and Kathleen (McCarthy) Powers, as well as many great nieces and nephews in both Canada and the United States. McCarthy contributed to major art developments throughout the 20th century. Born July 7, 1910 in Calgary, and raised in the Beach area of Toronto, Doris McCarthy was recognized as one of Canada's foremost landscape painters. Among her mentors and teachers at the Ontario College of Art were members of the Group of Seven: Arthur Lismer, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald and Lawren Harris. Doris graduated with honours in 1930 and began teaching at Toronto's Central Technical School in 1932, a position she held for 40 years. She was the first woman President of the Ontario Society of Artists. Author of A Fool in Paradise, an Artist's Early Life (1990), The Good Wine (1991), Ninety Years Wise (2004). In 1998, Doris donated her beloved home, 'Fool's Paradise' to the Ontario Heritage Trust to be used to maintain the property in perpetuity as a retreat for developing artists, musicians and writers after her death. Born curious, Doris had an unwavering exuberance for life. She was passionate about learning, teaching, writing, travel, nature, literature, self-discipline, spirituality, and the joy of good friends. Each day represented another opportunity for her to be grateful for the world in which she lived. While Doris did not suffer fools easily, she had numerous friends and family of varying ages, disciplines, backgrounds and interests (too numerous to mention) and treated everyone as a special and unique person. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME -- A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1st. The Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated in THE CHURCH OF ST. AIDAN'S, 70 Silver Birch Avenue at Queen Street East, Toronto on Thursday, December 2nd at 10:30 a.m. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Doris McCarthy Gallery (at University of Toronto Scarborough), Ontario Heritage Trust, or a charity of your choice. I feel very fortunate to have been a student of Doris McCarthy in the early 60's. She was a wonderful personality, never boring! I've followed her career with interest over the years and always thought of her fondly. She was unaware that she was a mentor to me just as she was to so many others. I loved her spirit and her work and I believe this planet is a better place because she lived on it for 100 years! Thank you Doris! I will always remember you with a great deal of admiration and respect!

Doris was my teacher and mentor at Central Technical School in the late 1960's. She made a profound effect on my life in general and my art. We lost touch for 20 years as I moved to the States and married. She and I rekindled our friendship in the l980's and on her trip to Arizona where I currently live she and I lunched together in Scottsdale. She asked me to critique her recent works with desert landscapes. That was a total switch for me, her asking for my opinion. What an honour. After a 45 year hiatus from painting, I am now spreading oil on canvas with a passion. She made such an impact on my life as a pioneer among women and one who speaks, acts and paints from the soul of her being. I will miss her profoundly. My heartfelt condolences to her family and her many friends. Lynn Janikun-Anglln, Tucson, Arizona.

My great aunt Doris was an inspiration to me, but perhaps not for the reason people might guess. I admired her spirit, her talent, her resolve, her literary achievements and artistic trailblazing. But the accomplishment that I aspire most to emulate is this: Her lifelong commitment to her friends.

Every summer, I would participate in the Stratford Seminars at the Stratford Festival with my parents, the same week that Doris participated. She would arrive with her little entourage of girlfriends -- Nancy, Virginia, et al -- and we would all sit together in the lounge of the nurse's residence and discuss the plays we had seen each day. When her first biography was published, I read about these women, some of whom had been her friends since childhood. Imagine fostering friendships that last 40, 60, 80 years! I want to be remembered as that sort of woman.

I met Doris in the middle 1960s when she was president of the OSA. At the time I worked for Roy Austin who was secretary to the OSA. Once I answered an incoming office call and spoke to Doris who wanted to talk to Roy. What a beautiful feminine voice. I had to meet her! When she finally came in I was blown away by the 30 year difference in our ages. I was 23 then. She was a surprise to us all. Don Hill, Toronto.

Doris was a very special person in my life all my life -an encouraging teacher at Central Technical School and a dear friend who always kept in contact with me and with so many of her students. I loved her very much and will miss her but will never forget her.
