ALEX GIGEROFF Obituary

ALEX GIGEROFF July 30, 1931 - May 2, 2016 "Doubly blessed with my education, coupled with my wide ranging curiosity, I've been able to span some science, law, philosophy, literature, all of the arts. Like transplanted Macedonian Zdravets (wild geranium) we spread and blossomed in new soil." Born in Toronto, on July 30, 1931 son of Kire Gigeroff and Velika, Macedonian parents. Alex earned his BA, 1952; LLB. Barrister/Solicitor at Osgoode Hall Law School in 1958; then his LL.M. (Master of Law) Toronto and a Ph.D., (Criminology) from the London School of Economics 1973. He then worked as Assistant Professor, Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, Toronto until 1975. He moved his family to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1975 where he taught, became a leader in the Yarmouth Arts community and an author and playwright. Alex is survived by his sister Vera Stoyanovich, son Andre Haines and Gregory Watters and grandchildren Andrea and Kier from his son Lex (1962- 2012); and other family members and many friends in Yarmouth and beyond. Alex's life will be celebrated in Yarmouth on May 29th and in Toronto at a future date. Check www.MacedonianHistory.ca for details to follow.

Alex, I will miss your calls on Macedonian holidays, your encouragement to keep writing. In fact, I would never have had the courage to attend university, at your urging, late in my life. You were there when I graduated years later. You are the ever widening ripple which keeps spreading outward, which touches people in ways you could not imagine. You will be missed and am grateful that I knew one part of you. You had so many parts.

I am so glad I found you before you left on the next leg of your journey. I am so grateful for all that you taught me when I worked as your legal secretary when you were first called to the bar. As a young girl I was like a sponge taking in all the knowledge I could that would serve me through my entire life. Thank you.
I am so blessed that in my search for you, I also found Andre. As kind and talented as you. My youngest grandson has your signed books that he will treasure throughout his life as well and I can also still hear you singing to me over the phone, when we reunited. Rest in Peace dear friend. The Heavens are blessed to have you.

Now at age 61,I vividly remember as a 6 year old boy visiting Alex with my father and twin brother when Alex lived in Whitby, Ontario, undertaking legal work for the Town. Alex always had crayons and paper for my brother and I when we visited. My brother and I always looked forward to visiting Alex, while my father and he discussed Town business. Good memories. As a young boy I always thought that Alex was an Architect with all his drawing paper in his apartment.

Alex, your keen wit and sharp mind will be missed by all that you touched in so many ways! You were always so positive towards so many people despite your problems. The fine people of Yarmouth were recipients of your love of art and sense of humour. When I sit to read "Baba's Macedonian Socks" to my grandchild- your singing will flash into my mind and I will cry tears of joy- that you gave me a way to share our Macedonian heritage with the next generation! Without doubt you have danced your way into Heaven already. A proud and generous Canadian with a Macedonian heart!
