Lionel and I met in the fall of 1973 and married a few years later. He was the most amazing man with the most brilliant mind. I never stopped loving him. Unfortunately we were not able to resolve some difference and eventually divorced. My 10 years with Lionel will always remain in my heart . We shared so many wonderful times together..... Toronto Aspen Victoria Jamaica ....There is not a day that passes when I don't remember him with all the love in my heart. RIP my beloved . Jo Williams

Not sure about commenting, as my connection is do distant. But I was searching online to find out where Lionel was and what he was doing and I was shocked and sad to come across this. Lionel was my bass teacher back in 1978 or so. He was playing with the Victoria Symphony. And he took me on part time. He was a very cool and kind teacher. He taught with such quiet enthusiasm, and his love of music and the bass really gave me a life-long appreciation. He told me to listen to, what was then a just out record, Heavy Weather by Weather Report, which sent along a path of greater musical awareness and appreciation. I moved out of town, so I stopped meeting Lionel. But I've never forgotten his influence on me, and his kind, gentle and kind enthusiasm I've never forgot. I guess I was 13 or 14 when he was teaching me, but dam, he was really cool! My condolences to Lionel's family and all who knew him.

I met Lionel almost 10 years ago at a low point in my life and immediately he made me feel good again and even invited me to spend Christmas of that year with some of his family, Clarke, Sylvia, Robin and more in Hamilton. That is the kind of person he was, kind, modest, down to earth and very sensitive to injustice. The friendship evolved up until the very end because of our love for music, and what a musician he was.
Sometimes I cannot believe you are gone brother. Rest in Peace.
I can hear you saying "sometimes less is more" during some of our bass lessons.
To your sons and the family, so sorry for your loss.
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel watching over you

Always in my heart

As one of Lionel's band leaders and record producers, I was very sad to hear of his passing. Lionel worked as my bass player off and on for 10 years and always did a great job. He also played on my Juno Nominated album "Dream Girl" creating some amazing bass patterns on my original tunes.
From the many great musicians of which you are one, we will all miss you

I've only known Lionel for a short little while. I admired his resourcefulness, talent and hard work in being a successful working musician and actor, no easy feat making a living in show business.... He was proud of his sons and family, in particular his sister, he would speak of fondly when telling stories. He always had a great smile, like the one in this photo. And he had a big heart, he embraced people, took them under his wing and was generous. As someone who loves music, I enjoyed talking music with him, he could take a piece a music and arrange it such a way that it was just an exquisite expression. He put a lot of fervour into music as he did into discussions of religion and spirituality. He was a truth seeker.
I send condolences to Clark and want to let his family know that I am sad he is not with us anymore.

I met Clark at McGill University in Montreal in the late 80's and early 90's. We hung out and played music together while completing our respective music degrees. Then I met Lionel! In Toronto. Lionel was like an older brother to me, we became friends immediately.
Lionel used to come over to my parents house in Toronto to jam, compose and arrange together and he would also take time to teach me how to play funk. He was a great teacher and a supportive friend. We would also meet at coffee shops just to talk about the biz and life in general. I organized some bands in which Lionel played bass and we gigged around town. Those were nice times.
I am saddened to hear of his passing. Wish we could play again. The last few years I have been living in New York and making music here.
I know Lionel though, he would say keep playing. So I will. I will cherish our memories. Condolences to the family. Take care.

I was astounded to hear Lionel is no longer a part of our lives. I always saw him as being a part of my life up in our 80's and 90's. I have known Lionel since mid-80's. We meant in the lobby of our apartment building. Lionel, always open to meeting new people, gave me his phone number and told me to call him, which of course I didn't. After meeting each other in passing several times in the lobby and him commenting to me on his lack of a phone call from me he finally said, if I didn't call him this time he wasn't going to ask again. This interaction tells you a lot of how Lionel was; warm, outgoing, friendly, persistent, he always knew exactly what he wanted.those are the traits that brought Lionel to Toronto at the age of 17 years old with his bass guitar in hand to pursue his career in music and succeed. He was Director of Music at the Blue Note in Toronto, had his own company called Bassarama selling rare base guitars, taught music, played gigs with his bands he played with, was playing in the Toronto symphony, wrote a song that is still played today in Australia, arranged music and even did some extra work on films. I was fortunate that I had made that phone call and was able to share a small part of his adventures in life and music. Lionel had two other loves family and children. He loved his children very much and treasured ever moment he spent with them. He was very proud of his three sons Clark, Trenton and Nathan. Rest in Peace
