Uncle Mike (an elder brother of my late mother Teresa Best Moore) was a kind and gracious man. A little story: I happened to bump into him in Stratford, Ontario in the late 1980's, where both of us were on solo theatre-viewing visits. As he was walking me across town one afternoon to catch my train, we came across a disabled car and its owner on a sidestreet. When we were about 20 feet away from the man, Uncle Mike yelled some greeting, to which the fellow did not respond; then, when we about ten feet away, Mike asked if there was a problem with the car, and again the man made little response. Finally, when we got up alongside the car, Uncle Mike stopped and asked the guy if he needed help. After a short discussion, the three of us were pushing the car along the sidestreet, with the owner periodically turning the key in the ignition to get the motor running. I ran out of steam in less than a block, hobbled by asthmatic lungs. I watched Uncle Mike pushing the vehicle far into the distance, perhaps 3-4 blocks. (I don't think the car ever started.) When Mike returned to where I was waiting, he walked with a sprightly step, while I was still gasping. And we continued on to the train station. Both his generosity toward his fellow man and his fitness of mind and body were impressive. I offer my sincere condolences to his loved ones.

A beautiful gentleman in the true sense. Always treated me, a mere clerical person at the Star, with as much respect as he treated his editors. Rest in peace sir.

Sincere condolences. Wonderful memories of Michael as a workmate and touch-football antics on Sundays. It was a privilege to have known and worked with you mate.

Dear Mike:
You were truly one of the Best I've ever known . . .
As a boss.
As a friend.
As a gentleman and loving family man.
And as a principled journalist.
Yes, you were a quintessential Canadian for all seasons -- especially the football, hockey, baseball and golf seasons.
We shard a lot of laughs, didn't we, Mike?
It was a privilege to be a small part of your wonderful life.

One of life's unforgetable characters.
Swam for an hour and then either sang in the shower or discussed a 19th century French author he was reading, or perhaps some moose pasture stock that he was sure was the next Eldorado.
Canada needs more people like Mike.
