RAE JOHNSON Obituary

JOHNSON, RAE March 28, 1953 - May 18, 2020 "I wanted to bring the sublime into people's experience." Artist, scholar, activist, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Art at Ontario College of Art and Design, Rae was known for her vibrant landscape paintings and "brutally honest and sometimes controversial excavations into the interior landscape of the female psyche." Rae was co-founder of the seminal artists' collective, ChromaZone, which spearheaded Toronto's figurative painting movement of the 1980s. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarke Rogers, and survived by her parents, June and John, her brother Allan, her children, Adrian, Joslyn and June. A memorial is being scheduled, Fall 2020, to coincide with the opening of her anticipated landscape exhibition. Donations can be made to ALS Canada.

My heartfelt condolences to family, friends and appreciators of Rae, she was special and it saddens my heart to learn this news. Hi, Roslyn and June. I babysat you two in Firenze, Italy when you were teeny. It was a short time but my time with you is clearly with me and I hold those memories dear. All these years later I looked up your Mom to reach out, realizing none of you would remember me if this reaches you, I would love to hear from you and I am sending my love and smiles of remembering.

. I met Rae in Art Class at an Ottawa High School! We sat together and Rae was a lot of fun to have a class with! I haven't seen Rae since then but I've thought of her, and will continue to do so. God Bless Rae! Mike Dobbin

Its hard to imagine that Rae is gone.
She was a dear friend with a big heart.
Rae was courageous in all her endeavours in life.
She was a visionary a seer of all things deep a supernatural.
A living Goddess and a dedicated Mother which was her greatest achievement, she loved her children more than anything.
She was a great teacher and loved encouraging others and preserving culture and community.
Her work lives on in her paintings for eternity as does her spirit.
Sending all our Love and deepest condolences to Raes family and friends and students.
