Frank DICKSON Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Oct. 1 to Oct. 4, 2016.
The Honorable Frank G.W. Dickson
August 22, 1931 - September 26, 2016
It is with sadness that the family of the Honorable Frank Dickson announces his passing. He is survived by Jennie, his wife of 59 years, daughters Gail and Donna (Dean), sons Joe (Micah) and David, grandchildren Andrew, Alison, Julia, Madison, Alec and Emily, great-grandchild Abigail, and a large, loving extended family. He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret. Born Frank Walker in Regina, he spent the first years of his life with his English immigrant parents. From them, he acquired his life-long love of language, which he and Margaret shared. His mother died when he was a young child and his father died a decade later. At age 15, he and his dog moved to Swift Current to live with Frank and Edna Dickson, who later adopted them. From that point forward, he was known to all as Frank Dickson. Frank met Jennie in Swift Current and they married in 1957. With Jennie's encouragement and support, he decided to pursue a career in the law. He moved his young family to Saskatoon and began his university studies. By the time he was called to the bar in 1964, they had four children, all under the age of six. The law was both a vocation and a calling for Frank from the moment he entered practice. He articled and stayed with the firm that became McDermid, Wright, Dickson, Molloy & Biss until he was appointed to the bench in 1978. There he flourished, bringing the full force of his intellect, experience and compassion to the task of dispensing justice - always at a pace of his choosing. He was respected and well-liked by most, and perhaps avoided by the unprepared. He retired from the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench in 2004. Frank was a man of many passions. These included golf, chess and badminton, as well as reading and jazz. A gifted raconteur, he enjoyed lively debate, blue cheese and dark beer, preferably shared with family and friends. His impact on our lives is permanent and significant. At Frank's request, there will be no funeral. A private family gathering will be held in his honour at a future date.

Alice and I extend our sincere condolences to Jen and family on the death of Frank. We go back a long way as Frank and I were buddies in Regina before we both moved to Swift Current in the mid 1940's. We shared many interests such as baseball, golf, good books, jazz, partying and mischief.
We were long time good friends as witnessed by the fact that we served as best man at our respective weddings and Frank and Jen's daughter, Gail, officiated at our daughter Judy's wedding. Good memories prevail.
Frank was a true gentleman and will be sorely missed
