Connie ABROOK Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3, 2017.
CONNIE ABROOK (TATE)
May 7, 1936 – October 28, 2017
It is with immense sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved Connie. Predeceased by her first husband, Eugene Tate, and by her parents, Marda and Walter Battreall, she is survived by her husband, Joe Abrook, who cared tenderly for her during her illness over the last eight months and with whom she recently celebrated their 20th anniversary; her brother, Roger Battreall (Jayne Funk) of Minneapolis, MN, and by her children, Kevin Tate (Claudia Morawetz), Karin Tate (Gabriele Penna); Kyle Tate; and Carol Morden, as well as by her stepchildren Joanne (Basil) McCormick, and Jeff (Leah) Abrook. She will be missed, especially, by her much loved grandchildren, Chiara and Julian Tate-Penna; James Kellogg; Andrea and Heidi Tate; Lauren Tate; Benjamin and Jaden Abrook; and Bronwin, Anwyn, and Roisin McCormick. It was her joy to have recently become a great-grandmother to Mika Gene Miki Tate-Penna. Born Constance Joyce Battreall in Logansport, IN, and earning a B.Ed at Moorhead State in 1957, Connie was a dedicated and caring educator for various Saskatoon Public Schools as a kindergarten and grade one teacher from 1975-1995. As a vivacious mother, grandmother, teacher, colleague, social activist, and friend she touched many lives and changed them for the better. There are no words to describe how deeply she will be missed. A funeral and celebration of Connie's life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church (323 4thAvenue South) on Saturday, November 4, at 7 p.m. Condolences may be left at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com Arrangements entrusted to SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME, 306-244-5577.

Mrs. Tate, as I knew her in 1989, was my kindergarten teacher. I have many significant memories of her and our classroom that year. Since then, I also enjoyed running into her at music events around the city, and reading her well-chosen words in her letters to the editor. Her memory and enthusiasm for her former students was remarkable!

Connie opened the door to school, at Holliston, for our three children, two as students and one as a wannabe. It was a joyful entry, for which I as a parent, have always been grateful. Her pedagogy included the immersion of learning skills in fun.

My heartfelt condolences to Connie's family. Connie was a big part of my mum's life and she became a surrogate momma to me after my mum died. I used to love catching up with her when she would come through Vancouver on her many road trips with Joe.

Connie Tate Abrook was instrumental in the works of the Early Childhood Education Council in it's earlier years. She was a dedicated early learning teacher and hardworking member of the Saskatoon Local and Provincial ECEC organizations and was honored with our Life Membership Award. Our condolences to her family and to all who knew her. (Sask ECEC) http://www.saskecec.ca/blog/posts/life-member-condolences.html

Connie will be missed - she was a staple in the audience of symphony events and concerts in the city. Such a loss from our music community.
