Heather Steck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 17 to Feb. 19, 2010.
HEATHER GALE STECK 1939 2010 Heather Gale Steck passed away on February 11, 2010 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, in her 71st year, after a brief battle with cancer. Born September 7, 1939 in Regina, she was the first child of Ausmus (Bud) and Irene Haverstock. Gale graduated from Central Collegiate in Regina and went on to earn first a degree in psychology from the University of Saskatchewan, and then a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of British Columbia (1962). She worked for some years in the Saskatchewan health system, mainly at the MacNeill Clinic in Saskatoon but traveling also to other cities and towns around the province. From the late 1960s, Gale became increasingly active in arts and crafts, and soon became a well-known Saskatchewan potter. She was a founding member of the Handmade House group. Also, she served for some years on the board and executive of the Saskatchewan Craft Council, in other arts organizations, and on show juries. She acted as an articulate and consistent advocate for the crafts community. Enjoying generally good health throughout her life, she valued fitness and had been, over the past decade, a devoted member of the T'ai Chi community in Saskatoon. Right up until she was diagnosed with cancer in January 2010, Gale kept up her own crafts production, undertook occasional travel and maintained a busy daily routine. Gale is survived by daughter Katherine Steck-Flynn, grand-daughter Alexandra Flynn and grandson Mackenzie Flynn in Calgary; by son Brian Steck and his partner Michelle Howe in Vancouver; by sister Susan Burden (Dick) in Victoria; and by former husband Warren in Saskatoon. Gale will be missed by a great host of friends in Saskatoon, Regina and elsewhere. She touched many lives as wife, mother, grandmother, professional counsellor, social worker, mentor, work colleague, neighbour and hospitable friend. She was particularly notable for her selfless generosity in helping and encouraging others, and for her own successful pursuit of an active, purposeful and productive life. The family thanks Dr John Shaw and all Gale's other caregivers at Royal University Hospital for their skilled and sensitive care over the last few weeks. Thanks also go to Gale's many friends for their love and support throughout Gale's illness, and afterwards. Arrangements have been made for cremation, according to Gale's own wishes. Please, no flowers at this time. A later memorial service will be held in Saskatoon, for which details will be announced in the coming weeks.

Our sincere sympathy to all of Gale's family.

We have known Gale many years and will deeply miss her. She was such a sensible, smiling, generous, hard-working, and talented person. It is hard to believe she is gone, and so suddenly.

Our condolences to you all. May you recall the wonderful times with her and smile.

Dear Brian and Katherine: I first met your mom in 1973, when she and I were attending the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts, It was easy to enjoy her company immediately and we hung out together for the duration of the class.

My fondest memory was of that pottery class. We'd agreed to go out for dinner one evening. I stopped by her room in the dorm on our way out. When she opened her door I spotted a very interesting free-standing sculpture in one corner of the room. It turned out to be a pair of mud covered studio jeans, completely stiff with layer upon layer of clay, accumulated over long hours of throwing. We howled with laughter about that for quite a time.

It was so typical of your mom's wonderful attitude, creativity and quirky sense of humor.

Little did I know when I saw her at an opening not that long ago, it would be the last time I would have a visit with Gale. I shall miss her husky voice, friendly smile and quick laughter.

Your mom was a lovely lady. Ron and I shall remember her well.

With great sadness, we ask that you accept our most sincere sympathies.

Dear Katherine and Brian, We have fond memories of being your neighbors on Preston Avenue. Your mother was a warm, wonderful, caring and talented woman. She was admired and respected by many. I happened to run into her at Handmade House a couple of years ago and it was like seeing an old friend. She will be missed by so many!

My deepest sympathies to the family of Gale Steck. Brian,Michelle, Katherine, Alexandra, Mackenzie, Sue and family, I share your grief. It is a shock for all of us that Gale passed away so quickly. Gale loved life and loved her family and enjoyed her grand children. I will remember Gale as a wonderful inspirational, open minded and generous friend. I had not the chance to say good bye to my deer friend Gale, or can one ever say good bye? Gale we will miss you.
My love to all of you.
