McADAM, Evelyn
Evelyn Maude McAdam was born December 3, 1924 on the family farm, in the fieldstone house her father built at Cardross, SK., the second oldest of seven daughters born to Edward and Edith Parker. Because there were no sons, the girls were expected to help with the farm work, especially Ev and her oldest sister Ruth who put their education on hold, leaving Stayner school in Grade 9, to work on the farm for three to four years before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force, women's Division November 9, 1943 at 18 years of age. She served for two years in Toronto, Rivers and Regina. After WW2, she completed Grade 12 and Normal School in Moose Jaw where she met her husband-to- be, Robert McAdam, a new young Priest from Toronto, at St. George's Anglican Church. They were married on August 22, 1947. She later taught in rural SK. until they moved on to Milestone where their sons Sam and Bob were born and later Whitewood where their daughter Margaret was born. Over the years, in all the parishes they served, which included Kindersley, Tisdale, Saskatoon, Delisle and Rosthern, Evelyn always fulfilled the role of "the Minister's wife" in exemplary, old school form - volunteering countless hours in her church and community. Ev worked over Christmas seasons for Canada Post as a Mail Sorter and would always take part in election activities as an Enumerator or Scrutineer. Every summer she showed off her superb gardening skills with a bounteous vegetable garden and colourful flower gardens throughout the Church and Rectory yard. Once in a while, she and Bob would get in some square dancing which Ev greatly enjoyed. Evelyn attended SIAST, where she achieved a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate at the age of 50, and went on to work at the old TB San and several years at Calder Centre. Her kind-hearted, down to earth approach always made people feel comfortable and cared for. Ev and Bob retired in Tisdale. They did some travelling, the most memorable being their trip to Ireland. Ev had always been an active Royal Canadian Legion member, having served as President and later on the executive committee of Branch #78 TVS in Saskatoon and attending meetings at #50 Tisdale Branch. After Bob's passing in 2004, Evelyn enjoyed watching the grandchildren grow, family get togethers and supporting her church and community until she was unable to live independently. In January 2012, she was admitted to Newmarket Manor in Tisdale where she was given the best of care in a beautiful, new facility. Having always loved to play everything from Scrabble to Bridge, she could often clean up on the prizes when Recreation staff had games on the agenda. Evelyn was thrilled to have so many friends and family attend her slightly advanced 90th birthday party August 30. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke on September 12 and passed away Friday, September 12, 2014, a tad shy of 90. Evelyn was predeceased by husband Robert, parents Edward and Edith Parker, sisters Ruth Tulloch, Phyllis Morin and Margaret Keevill and brothers-in-law Harold Tulloch, Eldon Morin, Harry Vogel, Ron Keevill, Richard Kivol and Sam McAdam. Left to cherish Evelyn's memory are her son Sam (Ruby) McAdam, Bob (Sharon Strachan) McAdam, Margaret (Bob) Henderson, as well as grandchildren Daniel, Emily, Shawn, Rogan McAdam, Marcos Henderson, Morgan Lee; step-grandchildren Michael Polegi, Christine Wallace, Stephanie Dyck, James Henderson, Katrine Christison, Cam Strachan, Jenna Limbert; many neices, nephews, step-grandchildren, extended family and friends. A Celebration of Life was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Tisdale, Saskatchewan, with Fr. Gethin Edward officiating. Interment followed in the Tisdale Cemetery, Tisdale, Saskatchewan. Donations may be made to the St. Matthew's Anglican Church as a token of remembrance.
