Alicia Popoff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 11, 2015.
Alicia died peacefully Monday at her rural Saskatoon home while her family kept vigil.

She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma five years ago but continued to teach and paint until shortly before her death.

After obtaining her MFA from the U of S Alicia became a prominent member of the province's art community, mounting numerous exhibitions of her paintings, imparting her talents to her students and designing with her sculptor husband Leslie Potter installations familiar around Saskatoon. Just 10 days earlier she and Leslie introduced their most recent collaboration, the Dapplers, two playful steel and concrete abstract animals, at Station 20 West.

Alicia's interests were not confined to the visual arts: she loved all forms of music and took an abiding interest in nature. Her intellectual curiosity compelled prodigious reading. She also had a special affection for her nieces and nephews.

She leaves her husband, daughter Danielle (Vince) and brother Wilfred (Alexandra).

A commemoration of her life will take place at her residence on Sunday of the May long weekend.

Donations in Alicia's honour may be made to the Visual Artist Distress Fund of CARFAC SASK http://www.carfac.sk.ca/

I read a memorial of Alicia's passing in The Green and White, and wanted to send good thoughts to all who loved her- we took art together at Mount Royal Collegiate, and later knew one another at the U of S. I remember Alicia's talent and beauty and intelligence- she would have blessed the world and her family as an artist and educator. Her song will go on.

Dear Leslie and Danielle,

I was so sorry to read about Alicia's passing. It was wonderful representing her at the Gallery in Winnipeg. But even more having her as a friend. I always enjoyed having all of you at my home in Winnipeg and visiting in Saskatoon. Her work hangs on my walls and on the walls of so many of the people I know.

May her memory be a blessing.

Dear Les,
I only met Alicia a few times, but was so impressed by her warmth and insights. It is clear that she made a tremendous impact on so many people and I am pleased to have some of her work in the Mendel Art Gallery collection. One of my favorites--a delightful painting of a cat was on view recently in the 50th anniversary exhibition.

Les & Danielle, we were so saddened to hear that Alicia had passed away. It was only a few weeks ago that I saw Alicia and you, Les at the Cancer Clinic and thought Alicia looks so very much healthier than when I'd seen in the past couple years, and I was so pleased to see her color looking bright, and her eyes twinkling. And now we say goodbye, too soon. Please accept our sympathies, and hopes that as time passes you will look through family pictures and remember moments that wee so special to you alll.
