Rosanna PARRY Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Jan. 25, 2016.

Rosanna Chu-Fai (Jen) Parry
April 8, 1951 – January 21, 2016
In the early afternoon of last Thursday, Rosanna, 'break of dawn' died; surrounded by the love and gratitude of her close, large earthly family. She passed into salvation, following her great- grandparents, Jim-Kow and Sue Jen, grandparents Bing and Alice Jen, her parents Wesley and Doris Jen, two older brothers who died in infancy and her younger brother, Edward Jen; her dear in-laws Rex, Kathleen and Stephen Parry. She is survived by her loving husband John, cherished daughters Esther May-Yuen (Kevin Waddell) and Ann Wu-Lai (Dr. Riley Hall); her unborn grandchild; her siblings Eva (Jim Wong), Ross Jen (Pia), Edna (Lorne Warrington), Randy Jen and Ronda (Richard Chiasson) and senior relatives, Mary Ma, Aileen and Sunny Chan, Dr. Ivan Jen and Dr. Suzanne Yip. Her family also included nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts, 'adopted' siblings; cousins of varying degrees, blood and step, in-laws and their children and grandchildren – a United Nations at the table. In 1960, Rosanna, with her mother Doris and three younger siblings Eva, Ross and Edna, came to Ponteix from Hong Kong, to join her father Wesley and grandparents, Bing and Alice. Rosanna's younger siblings Edward, Randy and Ronda were born in Ponteix. The family worked hard to turn 'Jan's Café' into a local landmark. Rosanna was the cashier, before turning ten. Her English and French rapidly improved, and her stellar school career was capped by graduation as valedictorian, and acclaim as Ponteix's 'Centennial Queen'. She went on to the U. of Saskatchewan, to earn B.A. and B.Ed. degrees. After a summer in Toronto, in 1975 she went to fly-in Weagamon Lake, of Sioux Lookout to teach. She met John while 'weathered-in' at Easter, 1976. A whirlwind courtship ensued of three dates in four months, with letters by daily mail service – started that very year! When she returned to Ponteix at the end of June, they were pledged to each other. They wed in Saskatoon on August 28th, and started married life in a 20'x21' home in Sioux Lookout. Rosanna's career as an amazing and caring teacher began in Weagamow, and continued throughout her life, culminating in Saskatoon, where she and John finally settled. Rosanna's love of photography began at the age of 15, when she received her first camera through a Hostess potato chip contest and never looked back. Through her beautiful photos, Rosanna documented their lives. Every family trip and special occasion was recorded by her amazing eye. Rosanna transitioned from teaching to become a professional photographer and began to document the lives of so many other families with such careful, loving detail. To share her love for the beauty that she captured, Rosanna joined the Saskatoon Farmer's Market and there she made so many new friends and admirers. Her beautiful smile would brighten everyone's day and her cheery greeting of "How are you, Sweetie", always bought smiles in return. Rosanna was very active in her church community wherever the family resided. She was a great supporter and promoter of local artists and musicians, as she recognized and admired the creative talents of others. In 2013, Rosanna was nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction award for Community Building. Rosanna loved us all deeply and we will miss her greatly. The Memorial Service to celebrate Rosanna's life will be on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Third Ave. United Church, 304 Third Avenue North. John, Esther, Ann and the Jen family,
While catching up on my Green & White reading today, I was surprised and saddened to see the alumni passing notice for Rosanna.
Bill and I are so sorry for your loss. Rosanna was always a very industrious person and a great contributor to community and society in general. Rosanna's bright smile was always there to lighten everyone's day. Her photographic work was beautiful and inspiring. Family and friends were very important to her. She will be greatly missed. Her passing has left a large empty space on earth.
I (Karen) remember when Rosanna first arrived in Ponteix, the early years of Jan's Cafe and many good eats there. Rosanna and I attended the same school in Ponteix and have had periodic contact throughout the years whenever our life's paths crossed. We have fond memories of all those times. You are all in our thoughts as you continue on without your beloved Rosanna.

John, we were Googling you and Rosanna to update our records (find your Saskatoon address)--and found instead your incredibly sad news. We've read the many obituary comments here, and it seems that Rosanna continued to be the warm, bright "How are you, Sweetie?" 'care-giver' we knew her as away back when at Dryden High School. Our thoughts are with you (and Esther and Ann), especially at this important time in the year and as the anniversary of her passing nears. Ron & Ann Cunningham, Ottawa

I had the honour of being Mrs. Parry's student at Tec Voc, many years ago. Her bright smile and cheery disposition is what made class oh so enjoyable, and I can say that she was one of my favourite teachers. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. She didn't speak much of her life prior to Tec and by reading her obituary, I can see that it was quite lively... just like she was. Rest easy, Mrs. Parry. Thank you for being a bright light in my life. You will be missed.

John, Rosanna was a gift from God and she fulfilled her mission on earth. May we take Rosanna as an example of a christion who lived her life fully with Faith, Hope & Love for you, her husband and daughters Esther and Ann and all her family and friends. It is only an "Au Revoir" - "Goodbye"; till we meet again in eternity. May god comfort & console you. Her teacher, Sr. Mariette April

Dear John and family - We were very saddened to hear of Rosanna's passing. In the short time that we came to know her so many years ago at St. Vital United, we will cherish the memories that we have of her. Perhaps our most favourite was the time that she tried to have her Sunday School class of 4 year olds, including our son Stephen, perform 'The Little Drummer Boy' at the church Christmas Concert. The memory still brings a smile to our hearts whenever we hear that song. With our sincere condolences.

I recently met John and Rosanna when they were visiting my brother in the hospital and then for only 45 minutes. However, you could see what a dignified and caring person she is. Her sweetness flowed out of her. Both her and John left a great impression upon me so much so that I felt I must pay my respects. My heart goes out to John. They were a couple but you could see that they are one. And yes they are still one. Heartfelt prayers for you John. May the God of comfort touch your spirit in this difficult time.

To the Parry families,

Deepest condolences on the sad news of Rosanna's passing. Your obituary summed up all of memories of Rosanna's life and most especially her "How are you, sweetie?" signature greeting. She was always the eternal optimist - so proud of her family and life in general. Our paths crossed as Rosanna was a university friend with a relative of ours and we all shared that very similar small-town immigrant Chinese upbringing and very similar career paths. Over the years, we would make the connection when we ran into each other at her sales or at a chance meeting at the local Chinese restaurants. We are blessed to have known her and be inspired by her strong commitment to her faith . She has left indelible memories in all our hearts.
What a privilege to have known her.

January 25, 2016

Our dear friend Rosanna will be truly missed. We have such great memories of her and will always remember her smiles and friendly chats, her encouragement and love and respect she had for everyone.

Rest in Peace Rosanna

We were so saddened to hear of Rosanna's passing - she was such a special lady who treated everyone like gold! Our daughter loved going to the Farmers Market to visit her and choose her special card each time - always a picture of a dog or cat.
