Professor Mulvaney was a great teacher. I appreciate what he did for me. My condolences to his family.

Carol and I send our heartfelt condolences to Jayne and family. Bob was uniquely dedicated to teaching, and, because he wore his immense scholarship so lightly, he always encouraged his students while never intimidating them. He was my first philosophy professor, and, although my intellectual road has taken many turns since I first walked into his classroom in 1976, I’ve found myself frequently returning to his example and what he represented these many decades later.

Lyn and I send our love to Jane and family. Bob was an important contributor to the philosophy faculty in many ways and in particular as a scholar teacher. His enthusiasm for his subject matter and his ability to stimulate student interests in the subject were widely recognized. He added an important dimension to the philosophy program at USC.

Bob was a valued colleague. What stood out most to me, a younger member of the department, was his dedication to teaching. He taught the history of his subject with passion and effectiveness. The introductory anthology he used (and others still use) spanned forty years and fourteen editions, in large part due to his editorial contributions to it. He also liked to teach philosophy to children. Annie joins me in offering sympathy to Jayne and all the family members.

Bob was a remarkable colleague, friend and mentor who embodied the very best of what a teacher/scholar should be. He will be greatly missed. Jayne is in my thoughts and heart.

It has been a while since Bob retired from USC, but we still remember his unique way of engaging with his students and fellow faculty members. He was always a force for good -- calm, rational, caring, genuine, open and friendly. My deepest sympathies to Jane and the other members of Bob's family during this time of grief and loss.
