William Anderson

William H. Anderson COLUMBIA - Born in Conroe, Texas and having spent his childhood in Houston, Bill attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture, and served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He returned to Houston and began an architectural career that spanned almost 50 years. He moved to South Carolina and in 1970 became a principal in Pearlstine-Anderson before going into private practice, which continued until recently. His contributions include new building designs, additions, renovations, interior design, planning, feasibility studies, design studies, master plans, historical restoration and other consulting services. During this time he served the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as past chairman of Building Code Task Group, past Chairman and member of Building Performance and Regulations Committee Steering Group, past Director of the SCAIA, 24 year member and past Chairman of SC Building Code Council, Southern Building Code Congress, Fire Prevention Committee, and member of SC Seismic Safety Consortium. He was author of the First Edition of "An Architect's Guide to Building Codes and Standards" as published by the AIA. Bill won recognition by the Corps of Engineers, SCAIA and his work was published in "SC Architecture 1670-1970" by the SC Tricentennial Commission and "20 Years of SC Architecture" by Clemson University. He will be remembered as a great raconteur and someone who loved to make people smile. In addition to his dedication and love of architecture and art, he had the capacity for love and unwavering generosity for those in need, often anonymously. Bill was a true Southern gentleman throughout his life. Bill is predeceased by his parents, William Hartford and Lena Mattie Ellis Anderson, and his sister, Gloria Jean Gulley. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 32 years, Margaret (Kay) Wooten Anderson, who shared his life and was his great love; his son, William R. (Bill) Anderson (Janice) of McKinney, TX; his daughters, Frances Tomlinson (Steve) of Charleston, SC, Linda Sievers (Mike) and Susan Darius of Conroe, TX; his stepsons, Alan McNeill (Brenda), Surfside Beach, SC, and Michael McNeill (Tina), Beulah, MO; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and his special friends and colleagues. The family would like to extend the utmost appreciation for the doctors at SC Oncology Associates, the professional care and support of the entire staff of nurses and techs at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital. A graveside service will be held at noon, Tuesday, July 28th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd., Columbia. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
