Francis M. McCarthy, 87, of Taunton passed away on Friday December 25, 2020 at Morton Hospital. He was the devoted husband of the late Jean M. (Dwyer) McCarthy. Francis was born in Taunton the son of the late Michael and Catherine (Reilly) McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy served his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Navy. He owned and operated a custom flooring and carpet business for many years. Fran worked for Hathaway Funeral Service primarily at the Crapo Hathaway location for over twenty years. He was a communicant of Saint Marys Church in Taunton. Fran was a member who was very active with organizing local dances for people with disabilities at the Taunton Lodge of Elks#150, the P.A.C.C. Mr. McCarthy was the past president of the Lions Club in Taunton and also a member of the Rehoboth American Legion and the Moose Lodge of Attleboro. Fran was a tireless advocate who served the special needs community in the greater Taunton area for over forty-five years, enjoyed searching for a good yard sale and decorating his home and local business for the holidays. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. Survivors are two sons: Gary M. McCarthy and his wife Diane Cavaliere-McCarthy of Attleboro and Bruce A. McCarthy of Lakeville; a sister: Lorraine Ferreira of Taunton; two brothers: Donald McCarthy of Bourne and his twin brother Frederick McCarthy and his wife Nancy of Raynham; along with several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Mark S. McCarthy. Calling Hours for Fran will be held on Thursday December 31, 2020 from 9am to 10:30am in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., Taunton, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11am in Saint Marys Church, 114 Saint Marys Square, Taunton. Burial with Military honors will be Privately held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. I remember when he was dating Jeanne. I had started working at Grant's with Jeanne and they were planning on getting married. Ran into him on and off during the years and saw more of him when he started working for Crapo's. He always had a smile and a joke. He was just a real nice guy. So sorry for your loss. Sincere Condolences to Fran's family and friends. He was an amazing person to all the people with disabilities. Kind hearted and will be greatly missed by all. Loved how he decorated his home for all the holidays.
