MURIEL SCAMMAHORN
WOOD RIVER — Muriel E. Scammahorn, 96, passed away and went to be with the Lord at 7:37 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018, at Bethalto Care Center.
She was born on Sept. 10, 1922, in Alton, the daughter of the late Warren C. and Anna (Orban) Campbell. She married Edgar Scammahorn on May 8, 1948, in a double ceremony with her sister Gladys and brother-in-law, Hugh Kelly, at the Roxana Church of the Nazarene. Her husband Edgar preceded her in death on March 12, 1998.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Galen and Cathy Scammahorn of Wood River; two granddaughters and their husbands, Shari and Troy Hochstetler of Lafayette, Indiana, Kara and Dustin Meza of Shawnee, Kansas; four great-grandchildren, Kyla, Ashlyn, Tessa, Luke; a sister, Gladys Kelly of Wood River; a brother, Warren Campbell of Rosewood Heights; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
Muriel was formerly the librarian at the Roxana Library and was the longest tenured employee for the Village of Roxana. Muriel was an active member of the Roxana Church of the Nazarene where she was a longtime Sunday School teacher and where she served as the church custodian for several years. She was active with the Nazarene World Missionary Society and the Illinois District Missions Board.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Monroe; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Campbell; and a brother-in-law, Hugh Kelly.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14 at the Roxana Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Troy Hochstetler will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorials are suggested to the Nazarene Missions International or to the Roxana Church of the Nazarene.
