Elizabeth Scheuer

Elizabeth Scheuer, 94, died at Mountain View Care Center in Scranton on July 27, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, W. John Scheuer, in 1994.

Born in Scranton in 1919, the daughter of the late Frances Watkins Powell and Edgar Powell, she was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and Powell School of Business and was employed by David Spruks Co. until her marriage in 1941.

She devoted her life to her family and serving the community. She was president of the Junior League of Scranton and received the Margaret L. Richards Award for her outstanding service to that organization and to the wider community.

She was highly involved in Elm Park Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Board, the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, the Elm Park Mid-Winter Institute Committee and as co-chair of the Elm Park Bazaar to benefit the missionary program. She also taught Sunday School for many years.

She was on the board of the Clarks Summit State Hospital, vice president of the board of the Lackawanna Mental Health Association, and was co-chair of volunteers for the Mental Health Association Friendship Club for former psychiatric patients. She was on the Scranton Day Nursery board, and co-chair of her Central High School 50th class reunion. She also served as a child care supervisor for the Scranton YWCA Women's World.

She was a loving, caring and supportive mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Miller and her partner, Walter vom Saal, Oneonta, N.Y.; her son, Jack Scheuer and his wife, Diane, Clarks Summit, Pa.; and her grandchildren, Marshall Miller and his partner, Dorian Solot, Albany, N.Y.; Kristian Scheuer, Philadelphia, Pa.; Brad Scheuer, Philadelphia, Pa.; and two great-grandchildren, Anya Solot Miller and Zora Solot Miller.

She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Ella Elizabeth Scheuer, in 2010.

There will be calling hours at the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., Scranton on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home.
