Pfc. Harold Patrick Hannon, born Oct. 19, 1915, in the Bellevue section of Scranton, the third son of the late Catherine and Albert Hannon, was a Marine who died in combat at the Invasion of Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, Central Pacific on Nov. 20, 1943.

Affectionately known as "Tiddley" for his prowess at the childhood game Tidleywinks, Harold was among 1,100 Americans killed during 72 hours of fierce fighting on Tarawa Atoll. He attended Scranton schools and enlisted in the Marine Corps June 3, 1942.

His military awards include the Purple Heart, WWII Combat Action Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Marine Corps Good Conduct, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Pistol Marksman Badge.

Previously surviving siblings, now deceased, are Romayne Cook and husband, Chester; Albert Hannon; Joseph Hannon and wife, Mary; William Hannon and wife, Florence; Eileen and husband, Fred Flesch; Richard Hannon and wife, Joan; Jean and husband, Edward Unger; Catherine and husband, Ed Barrett.

He is survived by nieces, Patricia Petillo, Catherine Cali and Florence Talerico; and nephews, William Hannon, Brian Hannon and Dr. Dennis Hannon.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass at 11 a.m. in Nativity of Our Lord Church at St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard St., celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor, followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton, PA 18505. The Marine Corps League of Scranton will perform a service at 5:15 during the calling hours.
