Jean Birtell of South Scranton died Wednesday at Allied Hospice Center. Her husband of 56 years is Lawrence Birtell Sr.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late James and Eleanor Grabowski Gilday, she was educated in Scranton schools. Before retirement, she was employed in the local garment industry.

Jean's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff at Allied Skilled Nursing Floor 3 South and to the Allied Hospice Center for all of their kind and compassionate care.

Also surviving are son, Lawrence Jr. and wife, Pamela, Pitttston; daughter, Michelle Rake, Scranton; granddaughter, Noelle Rake and fiancé, James Searles, Pittston; great-grandson, Noah Searles.

She also was preceded in death by sisters, Patricia Fenton and Marlene Yuskiewicz.

The funeral will be conducted Monday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., with Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. in St. John Neumann Parish at Nativity Church, 633 Orchard St., Scranton. Interment at Cathedral Cemetery will be private at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.
