Josephine Marie Valvano, 73, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully Saturday evening in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore after a lengthy battle with cancer. Her friends and family members surrounded her during her last days. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

She was the beloved wife of James Valvano. Jim and Josie celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on Aug. 17, 2017.

Born in Peckville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Olga Grasko Perechinsky. Josie was a graduate of Jessup High School and before retirement worked at WEA Manufacturing in Olyphant. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore.

Josie always remained positive and had a close circle of supportive friends. She dedicated her entire life to her family and enjoyed spending time with all of them. Josie also enjoyed traveling, especially to Maine, attending hockey games with her son, trying new restaurants, playing bingo, shopping trips with her daughters and granddaughter and most of all attending her granddaughter's performances and school events.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two daughters, Paulette Valvano-Repella and husband, Christopher, Bear Creek Village; and Christine Valvano, Dunmore; a son, Dominick Valvano, Dunmore; a granddaughter, Lauren Repella, Bear Creek Village; two brothers, Michael Grunza, Eynon; and John Grunza and wife, Tina, Archbald; a sister, Shirley Bradshaw and husband, Harry, Duryea; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the many physicians and staff at Geisinger CMC, Dr. Kristin Liptock and staff at Hematology & Oncology Associates of NEPA, and especially the wonderful staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all the care and compassion that was shown to Josie and her family throughout her illness.

Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Interment will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Dunmore.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore.
