Leo J. O'Boyle of Scranton passed away Sunday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart. His wife is the former Mary Ann Lynott.

Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Dr. Leo and Mary Roche O'Boyle. Leo was a graduate of Dunmore High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was the outstanding player of the 1949 Dream Game, selected to the 1949 all scholastic team and a second team all-state selection in his senior year. He attended the University of Miami on a football scholarship where he excelled on the football and baseball teams. He was a United States Army veteran serving as a second lieutenant, and played baseball and football for the Fort Knox team that won the all-Army football championship. He taught at Liberty (N.Y.) High School and the Scranton State School for the Deaf before becoming a teacher with the Dunmore School District where he also coached baseball and track and field. He retired in 1987 after 32 years in education. For more than 30 years, he worked as a real estate agent in Lackawanna and Pike counties. Leo was an active member of the Wildwood Park Outing Club where he enjoyed fishing and bringing along others for a fish tale or two. He served as a board member of the Circle Green HOA. He was a former member of the Elks Club. Leo served as the grand marshal for the 2016 Scranton St. Patrick's Day Parade. Leo enjoyed fishing and boating on Elk Lake and Lake Wallenpaupack, and watching his Miami Hurricanes on Saturday afternoons. It is said that Leo attended a record number of Little League baseball games and high school sporting events. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Dunmore.

Also surviving are three sons, attorney John O'Boyle, of Dunmore, and fiancée, Mary Jo; Leo O'Boyle, of Cape Coral, Fla., and wife, Lilian; and Patrick O'Boyle, of Frenchtown, N.J., and wife, Karen; a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Kelly, of Dunmore; eight grandchildren, Kathleen, John, Kara, Leo, Kaitlin, Patrick, Monserat and Mariel; one great-grandchild, Lilly; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Kathryn O'Boyle Hunt.

The family would like to thank Donna Zupp and the staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

The funeral will be Friday from the Albert P. O'Donnell Funeral Home, 2025 Green Ridge St., Dunmore, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Interment, St. Mary's Parish Cemetery. All those attending the funeral are asked to proceed directly to the church on Friday.

Friends may call Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, 500 Penn Ave., Scranton, PA 18503.
