Joan Harding Gavin, 89, passed away Monday evening at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York, N.Y., after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Dr. J. Robert Gavin.

The daughter of the late Bernard and Margaret (Reedy) Harding, Joan was a graduate of Marywood Seminary, Marywood College and Marywood Graduate School of Counseling. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Peter Cognetti for his outstanding care over the last 16 years and invaluable counsel, as well as to Dr. Eric Blomain, Dr. Gene Grady, Dr. Ted Stampien and the doctors and nurses at Sloan Kettering. They're also incredibly grateful for the many friends and family members who provided much needed care and compassion during this very difficult time.

Joan is survived by her son, Dr. J. Robert Gavin Jr. and wife, Tricia; daughter, Mara Gavin; son, Dr. Matthew B. Gavin and wife, Holidae; her grandchildren, Robert, Michael, Catharine, Cole (Coco), Savannah and Lily, who were her pride and joy; her brothers and sisters, Marylou Burne, David Harding Sr. and wife, Margy; Bernard Harding and wife, Julie; Karen Montsavage and Michael Harding and wife, Nancy; as well as her many nieces and nephews and the extended Harding and Reedy family.
