John J. Ocenas Obituary

John Joseph Ocenas, 94, died Friday evening in ICU of Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton. His wife of 61 years, Gloria D. Caruso Ocenas, preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 2009.

Born in Throop on Sept. 27, 1925, he was the son of immigrants from Czechoslovakia, the late John and Mary Jacubcin Ocenas. John graduated from Throop High School in 1943. He joined the United States Navy, where he was an aviation machinist's mate third class, and served in both World War II and the Korean War. John was employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot from 1953 until retiring in 1986. During his employment at Tobyhanna, John was a proud member of the United States Army Reserves for many years.

He was a lifetime member of St. Stephen's Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church and was so proud to tell you that he was the first member to be baptized in the newly built church, which relocated from Jessup to Dickson City.

Also surviving are his daughter, Gloria Vargay and husband, Joe, Dickson City; daughter, Janice Babyar and husband, Michael, Blakely; and son, John P. Ocenas and wife, Lisa, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren, Joseph A. Vargay and wife, Kristen, Woodbine, Md.; Lori Bray and husband, Jamie, Throop; Heather Rakestraw and husband, Michael, Montoursville; John M. Ocenas and wife, Kimberly, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Kristin Ocenas, Jersey City, N.J.; and Maurie Babyar and husband, Cody Mulusky, Montoursville; great-grandchildren, Anthony R. Vargay, Allyson M. Bray and Clark M. Rakestraw; and also a sister, Nancy Castellani, Clarks Summit.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Hudak; and brother, Stephen Ocenas.

Private viewing for family will be held at St. Stephen's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickson City, on Wednesday, July 1. Anyone wishing to attend church service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Peter J. Haenftling officiating, please practice social distancing and are asked to wear a mask if possible. Interment will follow at the Dunmore Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Stephen's Church, 25 Hillcrest Drive, Dickson City, PA 18447.
