Rosalinde K. "Rose" Thomas Obituary

On Aug. 2, Rosalinde "Rose" K. Thomas, age 85, died of natural causes. She peacefully passed on in her sleep to join those family members who have preceded her in everlasting life. Rose's last moments were spent with members of her family at her home in Providence, R.I., where she spent her last days under the care of her eldest daughter, Elisabeth N. Stewart.

Rose was born in Nurnberg, Germany, on Oct. 20, 1934, to Jean and Elisabeth (Laufer) Hahn. She had two sisters, Margaret and Mariann; and a brother, Hans, who have all preceded her into the afterlife. When she was 18, she married United States Army Staff Sgt. Raymond Truesdale Thomas, who was stationed in Germany. With him, Rose had six children, Bill Raymond Jean, Elisabeth Nancy, Raymond "Buck" Richard, Joseph Ronald, Rosalinde Georgia and Patrick David. In 1962, Rose came to the United States with her husband and family, eventually coming to reside in Scranton, Pa., near her husband's childhood home. She obtained her U.S. citizenship in 1966.

Rose suffered hardships as she struggled to raise six children in a new country, working two jobs and long hours in the textile industry to make ends meet; her husband deployed to Vietnam. Yet, she provided a good home to her six children through love, strength of will and a strong work ethic. She divorced in 1971 and became the fully independent and self-sufficient woman she remained for the rest of her long life. She suffered the loss of three of her children, Bill, Buck and Patrick, during her life. Regardless of the hardships, Rose was a friendly, outgoing woman. She had a great sense of humor and a beautiful smile which, with her strikingly blue eyes, she used to good effect. Even when she no longer needed to work, she continued working because she enjoyed the social interactions.

In 2019 Rose came to live with her daughter, Elisabeth, in Providence, R.I. In Providence, she enjoyed a full life near the ocean with dining out, family gatherings, her granddaughter's wedding and travel, including a long visit with her daughter Rosalinde in Georgia.

Rose is survived by three of her six devoted children, Elisabeth Nancy Stewart, of Providence, R.I.; Joseph Ronald Thomas, of Hughestown, Pa.; and Rosalinde Georgia Amos, of Richmond Hill, Ga. She leaves behind 10 loving grandchildren, Jessi, Chelsea, Ian, Bill Thomas Jr., Nathan, Lindsey, Kayla, Melissa, Casey and Aimee; and three great-grandchildren, Juliette, Anastasia and Adriana.

Her loved ones mourn the loss of a beloved mother, protector and confidante.

Rose's remains were cremated at Butterfield Home and Chapel in Cranston, R.I.
