Anthony M. (Tony) Mazzarella Obituary

Anthony (Tony) M. Mazzarella, 57, of Tunkhannock, Pa., died Monday, July 27, 2020, in Portland, Conn., surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on Sept. 17, 1962, in Scranton, Pa., Tony grew up in Clarks Summit and graduated from Abington Heights High School. He was a highly skilled plumber and welder with the United Association Local Union 524 in Scranton. He worked at hundreds of homes, businesses and construction projects throughout northeastern Pennsylvania, including contributions to the Lackawanna Energy Center power plant in Jessup. Tony retired in 2017 after 36 years of plumbing, and afterward he enjoyed keeping the engines running and wheels turning on a wide array of equipment at the StoneHedge Golf Club in Tunkhannock. He also enjoyed creating large life-size displays for the annual holiday Festival of Lights.

Tony's first love was cars and motorcycles. He was riding a mini-bike by age 7, and throughout his teenage years he loved riding dirt bikes with his brother and friends. In the 1980s and '90s, Tony raced motocross and later switched to drag racing cars, winning a number of trophies along the way. He was a self-taught master mechanic who could fix almost anything with an engine and wheels. His many projects included building go-carts for his family to enjoy and restoration of a '56 Chevy. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous soul who would do anything to help his family and friends, even when that meant talking them through plumbing and auto repair jobs over the phone from afar. Tony was also an avid marksman, and he enjoyed shooting at firing ranges and reloading ammo. He also loved playing poker and chess, winning nearly every chess match with family members and beating the highest levels of his computer chess games.

Tony is survived by his daughter, Pamela and son-in-law, Emanuele Lo Giudice (New Britain, Conn.); daughter, Alyssa, son-in-law, Matthew, and grandchildren, John and Sophia Kalberer (Portland, Conn.); mother, Marie D. and father, Joseph G. Mazzarella (Clarks Summit, Pa.); brother, Joseph M. and sister-in-law, Crystal Mazzarella (Monrovia, Calif.); nephews, William J. (Kona, Hawaii) and Samuel C. Mazzarella (Monrovia, Calif.); former wife, Cheryl Ann (Berlin, Conn.); cousins; extended family; and close neighbors.

A funeral mass and a celebration of life gathering for family and friends will be held when conditions permit after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The family requests that donations please be made in memoriam to the Cancer Research Society (https://www.cancerresearch.org).
