Howard S. Hinkley Obituary

Howard Stanley Hinkley went graciously to the Lord on Oct. 15, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving family and the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Betty Taylor Hinkley.

Born June 10, 1935, he was the son of Gertrude Tallman Hinkley and Stanley Hinkley. He graduated from Abington and then joined the Air Force where he was stationed in Alaska.

Howard was a proud member of the Scranton Fire Department for 32 years before retiring as captain. Most of those years were spent at Engine 8, also known as "the house that Howie built."

Howard was a member of Providence United Presbyterian Church and an active member of Masonic Union Lodge 291. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of the North Scranton Sportsman Club. He especially enjoyed fishing at Lake Sheridan and hunting on Barclay Mountain.

After retirement, he enjoyed snow birding to Florida with his wife, spending Saturdays with his grandson, Michael, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the apples of his eye.

He was preceded in death by a son, Graham Hinkley; a sister, Edna May Williams; and his brother-in-law and best friend, Carl Taylor.

Also surviving are his daughter, Grace Hanlon, who he couldn't have been prouder of; his brothers, Raymond Hinkley and wife, Joyce, Maryland; Paul Hinkley and wife, Karen; and Donald Hinkley, Scranton; his grandchildren, Jenna Cognetti and husband, Justin; Sarah Burke and husband, Brian, Scranton; Maggy Hanlon and partner, James Kelleher, Mayfield; Michael, Robert and Allison Hinkley, Scranton; and eight amazing great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Smith, Dr. Ferdinand Manahan, Davita at Allied, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all their support and kindness.

Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Providence United Presbyterian Church, 1145 Providence Road, with the Rev. Dr. Murray Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to service time. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, masks will be required for entry at the church and social distancing will be maintained. Interment with military honors in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Arrangements by the Bomberger-Lesko Funeral Home Inc., 1660 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
