Eleanor Magnotta Evans Obituary

Eleanor Magnotta Evans of Dunmore died Monday at the Dunmore Health Care Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's and dementia. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Michael D. Magnotta, who died in 1971. Her second husband, Thomas G. Evans, died in 1999.

Born in Scranton on Sept. 24, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Steintz Sienkiewicz. She was a high school graduate. Before retirement, she worked as a hostess and waitress in the restaurant industry.

She was a longtime member of the Waldorf Park Social Club. She loved listening to her polkas on Sunday mornings. She loved going to bingo, playing cards, pokeno and doing jigsaw puzzles. Eleanor also loved to cook and bake. Her apple and lemon meringue pies, along with so many more delicious dishes, were always made with so much love. Her homemade pierogies and pigs in the blanket were legendary. She loved sharing her food creations with family and friends. She was a longtime resident of Lutherwood Apartments, Scranton, where you would continuously smell the aroma of food coming from her apartment.

Eleanor loved being a grandmother and loved each of her grandchildren deeply. Eleanor always said, "her children and grandchildren were her life." She had a special, unbreakable bond with her granddaughter, Ashley Torbeck, who had spent all of her 36 years growing up with her grandma by her side. Ashley looked forward to all the sleepovers as a child, watching Yankees games together, playing countless games of 500 Rummy, making trips to the Farmers Market and learning all of Gramma's amazing recipes. Ellie was famous for her stack of coupons. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and was very much loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are three sons, Michael and fiancée, Trish; Paul and wife, Joan; and Harold Magnotta; two daughters, Mary Ann and Don Bunda, and Debra and Jack White; a brother, Edward Sienkiewicz; and a sister, Dorothy Sluck; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; and sister-in-law, Carmella Magnotta, Florida; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph, Stanley, Bernard and Chester Sienkiewicz.

A special thank you to all the staff at Dunmore Health Care who took care of her while she was there over the last eight years, especially, Cierra, Cory, Jackie, Rob and her buddy Clee.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 800 Taylor Ave., Scranton. Interment will be private.

Arrangements: Albert P. O'Donnell Funeral Home, 2025 Green Ridge St., Dunmore.
