Ann Joy Markowski Obituary

Ann Joy Markowski, 87, of the Greenwood section in Moosic, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, at the Regional Hospital, Scranton. She was born in Moosic July 26, 1933, and was the daughter of the late Stanley and Mary (Allen) Exter.

Ann Joy was a member of Divine Mercy Parish Church (St. Mary's Czestochowa Church, Moosic). She was a 1951 graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston, a graduate of the Pittston City School of Nursing, and a graduate of Keystone Child Care College. She worked as a director of religious education for 20 years with the Diocese of Scranton. She retired as a manager of Triangle Shoe.

Prior to its closing, Ann Joy was a very active member of her home parish church, St. Mary's Czestochowa, Greenwood. She was the co-founder of Adopt a Priest, she served as past president of the St. Mary's of Czestochowa Mother's Guild, vice president of its Altar and Rosary Society, she served as a Eucharistic Minister at both St. Mary's and Divine Mercy Parish, and she also served on the Women's Guild of Divine Mercy. Ann Joy was a member of the Blue Army, and she treasured her fond memories and friendships made in her 10 years as a member of the South Side Senior Center and the Moosic Senior Center. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Francis Markowski, who died on March 16, 1984; and her siblings, Celestine Popple, Allen "Echer" Exeter, Stanley Exeter, Ceil Exter and John T. "Chick" Boone.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Rothrock of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and her granddaughter, Skyler Rothrock. Also surviving are her sisters, Theresa Janes of Taylor; Mary George, Avoca; and Gloria Kostiak; and numerous, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be privately held at Divine Mercy Parish Church, Scranton, with the Rev. Francis Pauselli officiating. Interment will be held at St. Mary's of Czestochowa Cemetery.
