Joseph "Blackie" Kato Obituary

Joseph "Blackie" Kato, 90, of Jessup, passed away Saturday morning at Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness. His wife of 51 years was the former Margaret "Marge" Sewack.

Born in Jessup, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Kurilla Kato. He attended Jessup schools and was the owner, along with his wife, of Blackie's Teenage Center in Jessup, later called Joe's Restaurant. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He resided most of his life in Jessup and was a member of St. Michael's Church, Queen of Angels Parish. He was one of the original founders and lifetime members of the Jessup Carbino Club, which was responsible for building many of the ballfields and sponsoring youth sports in Jessup. He was also a local Golden Glove boxer along with his brother Len in his younger years.

He was a fabric of the community, a friend to everyone he met and a loving family man.

Surviving are a son, Joseph Kato and companion, Jennifer Bates, Knoxville, Tenn.; and a daughter, Karen Kato Chervenak and husband, Louis, Archbald; a granddaughter, Carly Lapiers; and great-grandchildren, Toby and Olivia; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Mike "Tata" Kato, Len "Perk" Kato and Steve "Monk" Kato; and sisters, Anna "Anka" Brunori and Marian DiBlasi.

The funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. but will be private. Memorial contributions may be sent directly to .
