Rose Pompey Obituary

Rose Pompey, 93, of Scranton, died Thursday at Allied Skilled Nursing Facility. Her husband of 74 years is Louis Pompey.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Frank and Anna Passari Tabarrini, she was a 1944 graduate of Scranton Technical High School, and was employed by Capitol Records before becoming a stay-at-home mom to her three children.

Rose was an insatiable reader, having read thousands of books, her favorite being Marjorie Morningstar. She was an excellent cook who learned her skills from her own mother, a restaurant owner, and always practicing in true Italian style, "A sprinkle of this; A handful of that." Every Sunday, she served dinner for the entire family, including all of her children and grandchildren.

Rose enjoyed playing Scrabble on Saturday nights with her daughter and family friend, Nancy Grochowski. Once the pandemic hit, she continued playing Scrabble daily with her daughter Lois, until the time of her hospitalization on Sept. 10. Rose reveled in completing the Cryptoquip, always proud to say she did it in ink (not pencil). She read The Scranton Times daily from front to back, also completing the Jumble and crossword puzzles. Her nightly game show pleasure was Jeopardy, and she even tried out to be a contestant.

In Rose's later years, she enjoyed her solo weekly trips to Atlantic City, but once Mohegan Sun Casino opened, that venue became her new gathering place. She could be found at the three-card poker table, where she was well known. Rose was an avid Frank Sinatra fan and very proud to have seen him perform 18 times, still having each ticket stub of those performances.

The family is most appreciative of the loving care provided by the first and third floor north nursing staff of Allied Services, as well as Dr. Thomas Minora and Jonathon Budziak of Allied Hospice.

Also surviving are her children, Lois Noto and husband, Casper, Scranton; a son, Andrew; three grandchildren, Nicole Cafarella and husband, Domenic, Scranton; Jason Noto and wife, Amanda, Walpole, Mass.; and Alena Musko, Scranton; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Gianna Cafarella, Scranton; Brayden and Milana Noto, Massachusetts; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Louis (Sonny), in 2006; daughter-in-law, Gail Connata Pompey; daughter-in-law, Alice Musko Pompey; granddaughter, Ashley Musko; two brothers, Dino Tabarrini and Nello Tabarrini; and sister-in-law, Lee Tabarrini.

Friends may offer their condolences Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home, 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required and all CDC guidelines will be strictly adhered to.
